Hawaii is a year round destination with a tropical climate, with the very best months being April to September. Temperatures are high throughout the year but never excessive, as humidity levels are manageable. There is a rainy season from December to March which is also ironically, the tourism high season, when the scenery is at its most lush and long, hot days break up the rainy spells.

Description

The Four Seasons Lana'i at Manele Bay sits in a prime position overlooking the sweeping sands of Manele Bay on the sleepy Hawaiian island of Lana'i and attracts golfers, honeymooners and families seeking relaxation, unspoiled surroundings and pampering.

The island of Lana'i which lies about 9 miles from Maui, is charming old-school Hawaii: an island with no traffic lights, a 'city' the size of a village and all untouched by mass development. No wonder that Larry Ellison decided to buy the island and has ambitious plans to make it self-sustainable.

The Four Seasons at Manele Bay sits overlooking Hulopoe Bay a sweep of golden sand edged with palms and lapped by turquoise waters, which at times become the resting place of hundreds of spinner dolphins who come to snooze in the quiet waters. The hotel is all about peace, relaxation and switching off all the while being looked after by friendly and professional staff. The team of 22 gardeners have created a tropical paradise of vibrant and scented plants, pools and waterfalls. Golf is also a major draw with two prestigious golf courses.

The guest rooms and suites reflect the islands old-world charm and colonial plantation history with carved wooden headboards, wicker and bamboo furniture and antique prints. They all come with private lanai's (covered terraces).

The focal point of the hotel is the oval swimming pool with built in whirl pools which seems to blend in with the ocean behind, surrounded by shaded loungers and private cabanas. Hulopoe beach is a short walk down the hill, the Four Seasons staff offer beach services – including complimentary use of snorkelling equipment (including prescription masks), lounge chairs and towels.

Lana'i may be sleepy, but it's no culinary backwater with guests able to enjoy the modern-Japanese fusion delights of Nobu Lana'i in a gorgeous relaxed semi open-air setting, all pale grey wicker and natural wood. One Forty serves prime surf and turf including wagyu beef from Snake River Farms and local Hawaiian catch. To complete the trio Kailani specialising in contemporary Italian cuisine made from the freshest local and organic ingredients, sourced directly from Hawaii’s fishers and farmers.

The spa offers a wide range of treatments including some which use traditional Hawaiian therapies.

Aside from the pool and beach, there are three tennis courts and the two golf courses and the children will be kept entertained at the Kids for All Seasons.

Anna Bleasdale (Staff)

For those who love the Four Seasons brand and all it's possibilities, this newly refurbished offering will not disappoint. The location couldn't be more idyllic, in a secluded and sheltered bay on one of the best beaches in the Hawaiian Islands, this is a very attractive hotel which immediately encourages you to unwind from the moment you step through the door. Your first view is straight through a wonderfully tranquil atrium to the glistening ocean beyond. Your Ambassador whisks you away for in-room check in so that you're able to relax and take in that view from your ever so comfortable and luxurious room, as soon as possible. Every moment you are here relaxes you more, from the lagoon like pools through to the gentle waterfalls and lush tropical gardens that almost spill in to the walkways as you head to your room. I think when I truly unwound was when I sat on the beach, watching the sun set beyond. Earlier in the day I had snorkelled in the bay, the perfect spot for such an activity, it's protected by the reef so no big waves, just an abundance of coral and brightly coloured fish. They even have regular dolphin visitors in the area as they come in to rest, although not today. In the evening, tiki lanterns lead the way to a couple of fabulous restaurants (there's no 3 month wait for a table at the Nobu here) or for something a little lighter, the sports bar is still elegant and refined but just a bit more casual. Retreat to a wonderfully soothing bedroom through walkways of warm wood and pleasing artefacts. The next morning, an early morning stroll on the beach, a round of golf at one of the top courses in Hawaii or simply a lazy day, await you. This tiny island of 3000 people welcomes you with a Hawaii or a bygone day and the people here will bring you into island time. No crazy sightseeing or day touring here, just time to unwind, relax and enjoy Hawaii of old.
