The West Coast of Hawaii is the sunniest part of the island, and is a year round destination with a tropical climate, with the very best months being April to October. Temperatures are high throughout the year but never excessive, as humidity levels are manageable. There is a rainy season from December to March which is also ironically, the tourism high season, when the scenery is at its most lush and long, hot days break up the rainy spells.

Located in the heart of the Kohala Coast on Hawaii's Big Island, the Fairmont Orchid is a superb resort style hotel set in 32 lush tropical acres on prime ocean front, perfect for enjoying spectacular Hawaiian sun sets and a fun family beach vacation.
With the summit of Hawaii's biggest mountain peeking up in the distance, the Fairmont Orchid is located on Hawaii's spectacular Big Island. Known for it's stunning volcanic scenery and volcano that still billows and spits lava daily, this is a very special place to stay. The Fairmont Orchid is less than 2 hours drive from the summit of Mauna Kea, an incredible place for sun sets and stargazing, and only 3 hours drive from the fascinating volcanoes national park. With such interest and a wealth of exciting activities close by, the Fairmont makes for an ideal base for both a relaxing beach vacation and adventure too.
Set in a U shape to make the most of the ocean views, the 540 guest rooms and suites are designed in traditional style with spacious interiors and marble bathrooms. The Fairmont Gold Floor is well worth upgrading to with an exclusive lounge and views out to the beautiful West coast sun sets.
The focal point of the resort is the lagoon style pool, set back from the ocean front with ample terraces and lawns to relax in. Just in front is the rocky beach which is kept as safe haven for the native Hawaiian green sea turtles that regularly head there to bask in the sunshine during the day before returning to the ocean at night. To the left of the resort, the half moon shaped beach offers a protected lagoon for safe swimming and water sports away from the ocean waves. A fantastic place to take out a stand up paddle board or practice snorkeling skills.
For guests who like a more active stay, there are world class tennis courts and the famous 36 hole Hawaii golf course right next door. For a little more relaxation, head to the calming Spa without Walls, nestled into the tropical gardens amidst tranquil waterfalls or perhaps an ocean front massage, just set back from the beach.
For families, the Keiki Aloha children's club brings a fun choice of activities for children aged 5-12 to enhance their Hawaiian experience.
The area around the hotel is known as Mauna Lani and within a few minutes drive guests will find a number of additional restaurants, a small supermarket and a variety of lovely boutique shops to enjoy.
This may be a larger hotel but the friendly welcome and superb facilities make it a warm and enticing option for guests wanting to experience this amazing island for themselves.

Norio's Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar offers some of the best sushi on the island and the Orchid Court offers a sumptuous buffet breakfast. Head to the Luana Lounge for cocktails and evening music. There are cultural hikes to the nearby petroglyph field, lei making lessons and Hawaiian outrigger and canoe paddling in the ocean. The 10 court full service tennis center is considered one of the best in the US and clinics and lessons are available. There are two golf courses within easy reach, the award winning 36 hole Hawaii golf course is right next door and the South Course, par 72 is close by and built on the prehistoric Kaniku lava flow. For water sports enthusiasts, the Fairmont Fun and Sun Activity Pass gives guests access to snorkel, stand up paddle board, boogie board, kayak and noodle rentals for the entire stay, these are all provided at the Beach Shack.
For guests who would like to take part in a wonderful Hawaiian tradition, the Saturday night Lu'au is a must. The Orchid is the quintessential Fairmont property. Built in a U shape to make the most of the fabulous sunset views, it is large but it has been elegantly designed to make it a first class resort. It was refurbished in 2014 and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. Contemporary it is not, however, it's a really good all round finish and makes an excellent choice for family vacation. I loved the little touches such as the tiki torch lighting ceremony every evening including the blowing of the conch shell to signal the end of the day. The pebble beach in the very front of the resort is a haven for green turtles and they come up to bask in the sunshine there each day. Due to this, guests aren't allowed on this beach, however, there's a great sandy cove just adjacent which is safe and perfect for children and also for learning watersports and practicing snorkeling. There are lovely gardens, a divine "spa without walls" offering treatments by the beach and overlooking the waterfalls in the grounds and a smattering of restaurants in the grounds including the Halekai which offers literal feet in the sand dining, a popular spot for sundowners. It's a big hotel so I would recommend heading for the Fairmont Gold Floor. With just 45 rooms, it's a small hotel within the hotel which offers a more intimate feel and some lovely ocean views as well as a private lounge with breakfast, drinks and afternoon tea daily. It's tremendous value and gives just that little bit of extra luxury and special feeling in an otherwise large hotel. That hotel, I stayed there twice with a gap of a few days in between, yet when I turned up for my second stay they immediately addressed me by name and welcomed me back, now that's not bad service for a large hotel and made me feel a little bit special. So all in all, a good option and at a lower price than other hotels on the same coast, even in Fairmont Gold, well worth considering.
