For those that prefer a boutique hotel this grand old hotel may not initially appeal. On over 107 acres and housing over 540 guest rooms and suites, it certainly isn’t small, however, what it lacks in intimacy it certainly makes up for in character, location and facilities.

The Breakers has been in Palm Beach before the town was even established and has a fascinating and sometimes chequered history (ask about the rum boats that serviced the hotel when liquor was illegal!). However, a multi million dollar refurbishment and lots of love and attention, not to mention the staff, make this a homely and warm experience despite the large size.

Set over half a mile of wonderful golden sands with mostly lagoon like waters and a reef close by for a spot of snorkeling, it is the perfect spot for a beach front vacation. On windier days, the seas rise high enough for a spot of gentle surfing for those brave enough whilst others can simply walk the beach or enjoy one of the five pools for something gentler. Everyone is catered for here, there is a dedicated family pool complete with lifeguard, a tranquillity pool for those who would like a little peace and quiet and a lap pool for those serious swimmers. The Beach Club restaurant is perfect should guests not wish to move too far from their sun lounger during the day or the decadent pool side bungalows are available to rent for those who wish to be waited on hand and foot.

The Spa At the Breakers is the place for total relaxation and pampering and offers an array of sea inspired treatments for guests to enjoy as well as a fitness center just for those enjoying the spa facilities. A further fitness center and studio for complimentary classes is available in the main hotel.

For families this is the ideal place to be. With a whole Family Entertainment Centre available for them to utilize the little ones will never be bored. Children’s programs which include anything from glitter tattoos to turtle experiences are available and run daily for an additional charge. Evening programs are also available should you wish a table for two for dinner on occasion.

Golf enthusiasts will be in heaven with 36 holes of historic Ocean Golf Course and the contemporary Rees Jones Course at Break Waters on site as well as two state of the art learning centers of the John Webster golf academy. 10 tennis courts with pros on hand will be sure to improve your tennis game as well.

If you can tear yourselves away from the abundant facilities on site then downtown Palm Beach with fantastic shopping and restaurants is only 15 minutes drive away. The fine art galleries, designer shopping and fine dining of old Palm Beach are even closer. However, with nine restaurants on site you will be spoiled for choice for dining opportunities at the hotel. The Top of the Point restaurant assures wonderful nigh time views.

Accommodation options are simple here. The ocean front rooms are the only ones with balconies and so are highly recommended and coveted although are not suitable for children under the age of 6. Being a historic building, you will not find balconies anywhere else. The one bedroom suites offer the best views and can be extended to up to five bedrooms for larger families.

The Breakers Palm Beach has 540 guest rooms including 69 suites. Guest rooms were completely refurbished in 2011 and are wonderfully spacious with traditional furnishings encompassing the feeling of light and the beach. Ocean Front rooms and suites are the only accommodations to have balconies and magnificent direct ocean views, however, the balconies are not suitable for children under the age of 6. Rooms can also interconnect for families.

Room facilities include bathrooms with separate shower and bath, bathrobes, complimentary water, complimentary Wifi, TV and DVD player, telephone, iPod dock, mini bar and hairdryer.

Children are embraced at Breakers and made to feel very welcome at the Family Entertainment Centre. This houses the Italian Restaurant which is the most family friendly of all the restaurant, there is also a playground with sprung floor, children’s playroom, arts and crafts center with 1000 gallon saltwater aquarium, children’s games arcade, outdoor sports court and computers and video games. The facility is complimentary for all younger guests to use when accompanied by an adult.

Children’s camps are also available and are half day (9am to noon) or full day (9am to 3pm), these are at an additional cost.

Four heated oceanfront pools including one ideal for families and one peaceful tranquillity pool, four whirlpool spas, half a mile of private beach front, 25 luxury poolside cabanas for daytime rental with concierge service, oceanfront spa and 36 hole championship golf and John Webster golf academy, 10 lighted Har-Tru tennis courts, 11 shopping boutiques, 8 restaurants and 8 bars, 24 hour in room dining, family entertainment center and babysitting services. Water sports available including snorkeling, scuba diving, catamaran cruises and boogie boarding / surfing (subject to sea conditions).

The new Ocean Fitness complex has just opened offering a 6000ft indoor / outdoor fitness with spectacular ocean views and has been designed as one of the finest hotel fitness complexes of it's kind.

When to go

Florida is a year-round destination with balmy winters, but summers can be hot and humid. The best time to visit Florida is between March and May and in December when it is warm and sunny, before the weather begins to get too hot. Hurricanes and other less serious tropical storms can strike Florida any time in the summer up to the end of November, however the risk is greatest between August and October.
