There are also two swimming pools, one of which has an optional clothing policy both in the pool and on the surrounding deck. Both pools are outdoors yet remain heated year-round, each boasting Japanese hot baths and a dry sauna. The fitness room can be found tucked away in a grove of trees and is equipped with a range of cardio and weight equipment. Yoga and pilates classes can also be enjoyed in this wonderful setting.
The nine state parks that surround Big Sur are synonymous with dramatic scenery and outdoor adventure. The adventurous can enjoy exploring by bike, on foot, on horseback or by kayak and have the option of taking to the famous California waves for a spot of surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing or even diving. Tennis and golf can easily be arranged nearby and there is ample opportunity for wildlife spotting too - keep your eyes peeled for coyote, whales, sea lions and deer.
The beaches close to Ventana Big Sur are rugged and wild and beautiful for soaking in a striking sunset or enjoying a romantic picnic. Esalen Hot Springs are perfectly situated on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean for a night-time dip and can be accessed for a small fee between 1 and 3am. Ventana Big Sur is located on the Big Sur Coast off Highway 1, 28 miles south of Carmel.
When to go
Big Sur is an all-year destination. For nature lovers, the coast is wonderfully wild in winter and you can go whale-watching and birding; spring sees wonderful flower displays, and there are a host of watersports to be tried at the beach in the summer; autumn brings harvest bounty and temperatures are usually still balmy. The fog is present mostly in May and June, but usually burns off by lunchtime.
