Palm Springs weather is best in the winter. Summers can be extraordinarily hot, temperatures may easily climb above 100ºF/38ºC from mid-April through mid-October. As a green oasis, its easy to forget that Rancho Mirage is a desert resort. High season for the resort is during our winter months from November to March when weather is cooler. During the summer months it is hot in the desert but staying here then becomes incredibly good value and there are plenty of pools to cool down in after a day exploring. Guests visiting Palm Springs on a road-trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles welcome a stop at beautiful the Ritz Carlton, and it makes the perfect base for exploring Joshua Tree National Park and for geological jeep-tours of the San Andreas Fault.

I loved the fire pit rooms at this property. Located on the ground level you can also walk straight out onto the hotel grounds from your terrace. In the evenings there is nothing better than sitting outside on your terrace, roasting marshmallows over your fire and doing a spot of stargazing.

So the Ritz Carlton Rancho Mirage was my very first introduction to Palm Springs and the very first place I arrived. I couldnt have come to a better view! The only hotel to be set up on the hillside rather that down in the valley, it takes full advantage of the stunning views out toward the mountains and the cities spreading out below. After a long drive and a busy few days in Las Vegas this was definitely the place to come to. As soon as I stepped into the lobby a feeling of relaxation came over me. Although it had the typically Ritz Carlton style, modern, contemporary and relatively formal, there was something different here, something inviting me in to sit down, relax, enjoy. Perhaps it was the friendly and very welcoming staff, perhaps it was the other guests milling around or perhaps it was the fun little touches such as the free sweets and chocolate station I spied off in a corner of the lobby that made me feel at ease and as if this place would be somewhere Id like to stay for a while. I was quickly directed to my room, complete with a lovely view over to the mountains and small but perfectly comfortable balcony. I didnt stay long, I was off to explore and soon found my way into the center of the hotel. Yes, this felt like a vacation hotel, from spying the other guests relaxing on their terraces (some of which has fire pits, a really nice little extra for cooler evenings) through to a family playing giant jenga on the small but aptly named games lawn through to the buzzing pool and rather tempting hot tubs with incredible views across the valley. I took a stroll around the reflecting pool and plonked myself into a rather comfy chair overlooking the view. Yes, I liked it here, I could stay a while. I flicked through the hotel newsletter that Id picked up in the reception area and spied a number of nice complimentary touches. Fitness classes, a rather early morning hike and a more gentle nature walk. News of the opening of The Edge, the hotels splendidly set steak and seafood restaurant, that evening or the rather more laid back State Fare bar and grill. I decide to stay low key that evening and head to State Fare. Traveling alone I can often feel a little exposed on my own in a restaurant but it was surprisingly pleasant here. The waiting staff were lovely and efficient and friendly, perhaps a little too attentive but maybe it was because I was on my own. Looking around the restaurant had a mix of couples, families and a couple of small groups of friends, which I liked. It really has got that feel of being welcoming for all. The food was good and I headed back out to the now dark gardens, decorated beautifully with twinkling lights which adorned the palm trees and with the flickering of the fire pits on either side and then a main one down by that incredible view, which is now just a small collection of lights below (apparently Palm Springs minimizes street lights to protect the incredible night sky viewing as much as possible). I am drawn back to the comfy seating from earlier, plop down, well fed and look skyward. The stars are just beginning to appear in the early night sky, yes, Ill just stay here a while.
