Average time to visit
Like most California destinations, you can’t go wrong when picking a time of year to visit. Being inland, Napa Valley benefits from much higher summer temperatures than the cool coast, and is a year-round destination but best from April to October. At the vineyards, September is typically the harvest month, although some varieties may be picked through October and November. Vineyards will be bare from December through February, with new buds returning in March and coming into full bloom by June.
Summer temperatures reach up to around 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, and cool off to about 50 in the evenings, so you’ll want to bring a variety of clothes and dress in layers. Winter highs are around 60 degrees with lows occasionally just below freezing. The region averages around 200 days of sunshine per year, so you should have plenty of good weather to enjoy the outdoors.

Located in the heart of wine country, Solage sits on 22-acres of Napa countryside. Boasting a modern farm aesthetic, it's recommended for families and couples looking for a chic retreat, where award-winning food, and health & wellness are high priority.
Nothing is too much trouble at Solage; warm and friendly staff are standout here. Single level studio style suites are dotted through this 22-acre property, with high ceilings, recycled walnut furniture, muted natural fabrics and every little comfort considered. Their style is pared-down as the resort is for sociable sorts who will enjoy hanging by the pool, playing a game of bocce ball or out in the valley enjoying a concierge-led wine tasting experience, or at a local ranch cooking with ingredients farm to table.
Solage boasts a Michelin Star-rated restaurant, with an informal state of mind. A locally sourced, ingredient driven menu serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with indoor and outdoor dining areas complete with fire-places, Solbar is a favourite of locals and guests a like. True to Napa Valley form, the food menu is complemented by an extensive wine list, and each dish can be perfectly paired with a glass to enhance the flavours and nicely round off a delicious meal.
If it’s relaxation you’re after then Solage is the Napa hotel for you. The spa has a true wow-factor from the moment you arrive. The spa utilises the hotel's natural geo-thermal pools, guests can enjoy a pre-treatment soak in the rejuvenating waters, before indulging in a massage from the extensive spa menu, or experimenting with a detoxifying treatment at the hotel’s signature Mud Bar.
Aside from the three geo-thermal spa pools there are two main pools; one exclusively for adults and one for families, each with a hot tub and relaxation area, and complimentary fitness classes are offered at the Yoga & Movement studio daily to help you unwind.
Each studio comes equipped with bicycles, and a range of trails can be found within easy reach of the hotel for hiking, biking and jogging. Tours can be arranged to the surrounding valleys and vineyards, helping you to unleash your inner sommelier and familiarise yourself with some of Napa’s finest wines. Nearby Calistoga provides a number of shops, galleries and alternative dining options making it a pleasant place to while away the hours.
Each of the Solage’s 83 studios and 6 suites is furnished in natural hues with soft Italian linens and original artwork to create a relaxing and comfortable environment. Plush robes and slippers are provided, along with all-natural bath and body products, and Capella Suites come equipped with an outdoor hot tub for ultimate relaxation in a perfectly private setting. Products are all-natural and locally sourced. Extras are included such as wifi, complimentary coffee, tea and mint infused-water.
Solage has several suites located near the pool that have connecting doors ideal for families and secluded suites with hot tubs nearer to the Oak Grove recommended for couples.
Children are very welcome at Solage Calistoga, and the Atlas studio is ideal for families, offering two queen beds. There is also a dedicated family pool where children are welcome.
The Michelin Star-rated Solbar restaurant is headed up by Chef Brandon Sharp who honed his craft at some of the country's most highly regarded restaurants including French Laundry in Napa Valley and Gary Danko in San Francisco. The food is inspired by the most fresh and ripe ingredients available locally, and the menu includes modern and innovative plates that feature true Californian style food.
Some of the varied dishes include tempura-fried white shrimp with snow peas and Asian pear, grilled duck with pomegranate, and Loch Duart salmon with spaetzle and cauliflower Napa cabbage.
A pair of cruiser bicycles are parked outside every studio room for spontaneous cycle rides around the surrounding wineries and nearby downtown Calistoga. Pilates and fitness classes are offered daily in the Yoga & Movement Studio and with 20,000 square feet of dedicated health and wellness space, the award-winning Spa Solage is sure to cater to all your restful and indulgent treatment desires.

Maudie Tomlinson (Staff)
The Solage is a dreamy Napa retreat with every amenity you'd expect from a luxury resort. What makes this resort a stand-out for me is its incredible staff. From the cheerful bell man that greeted us and drove us to our suite after we'd arrived in from San Francisco very late at night, to the restaurant staff who rang ahead to see how we were and to let us know the Solbar was still open for us to enjoy dinner despite the time; to the incredible sommeliers and maitre d' when we sat down who made us feel like we had truly "arrived" in wine country; to the spa staff the morning after who cocooned and pampered us like never before and made any signs of travel and too much wine disappear!
I recommend Solage to guests looking for a laid-back Napa retreat, whether family or couples as they cater for both and have a family and couples only pool. The "villagey" feel means that guests wonder around in their spa robes or ride their bikes around the resort and to nearby vineyards. Everyone seems truly at home here. Rooms are pared-back, they aren't what you might expect with simple linens and accessories but everything is perfectly thought out so you have everything you need and more. Full size coffee percolators and jars of coffee and refilllable glass bottles of cold mint-infused water are examples of how Solage like to provide things that make you feel at home. They also have full size organic shampoos, conditioners and body washes in their bathrooms.
Highlights of a short but sublime stay was the incredible dinner at Solbar. The heirloom melon and duck proscuitto with pickled watermelon rind and treviso marmalade was to die for. The slow-roasted hobb's pork belly with mission fig was mouth-wateringly good. In the morning, order the cinnamon sugar donuts cooked to order - the best antidote to too much good Napa pinot noir the evening before.
For any guests that intend to indulge in the spa while in Napa, book in at Solage. Taking design inspiration from a 'Terry Cloth Robe' it has achieved just that, a cosy yet fresh feel to it guests can easily spend the day here whether they have a spa appointment or not which is quite unusual for top spas. Their geo-thermal pools in the spa cater for adults only, one for women, one for men - and one clothing optional!
Don't miss out on the Mud Bar signature mud slide treatment; sit at the bar and choose an oil to suit your mood, which will be mixed with mineral rich mud just for you; next smother yourself in it and lye down and relax for 20 minutes while all the goodness soaks in; then wash it off before enjoying a soak in a beautiful bath (with champagne!) for 20 minutes and then... the best bit is being cocooned in a vibrating, musical SO-Chair that is designed for the ultimate 20 minute power nap! By the end you'll be well and truly revitalised. I'd also recommend the signature Oxygen facial afterwards, so fantastic was the power of this magic plumping facial, I stepped out of the spa looking like an LA a-lister (almost)!
