San Diego has a year-round climate. Summer (June - September) is the peak-tourist season, this is when the weather is at its hottest and the city can be over crowded. If you are visiting in May or June watch out for the 'marine layer', a cloudy overcast, almost fog-like cloud which may affect the beach and first mile or so of the coastal strip, especially in the mornings.

Rancho Valencia defines rustic luxury. Not a single detail is missed but it's done in an effortless way. Fire-warmed terraces, worn leather chairs, valley views, coastal-ranch cuisine, gorgeous casita-style accommodation with private sunny terraces overlooking the Californian hills.
For dining, choose from signature restaurant Veladora with its delicious seasonal menu, and one of Damien Hirst's famous Kaleidoscope works in the dining room, made from thousands of colorful butterfly wings in intricate patterns reminiscent of stained-glass windows, or the polo-inspired Pony Room. Be sure to have some pre-meal bar snacks here and a drink or two, however you would need a fair amount of time to sample all of the 100 craft tequilas they have on offer!
Rancho Valencia has world class tennis facilities (17 hard courts), staffed by tennis pros and former champions, so you're sure to get top-notch tuition and tips! On top of the tennis clinics, private classes or independent use of the courts, there are numerous complimentary fitness classes on offer, and even a bocce ball court and croquet lawn. The facilities are truly impressive.
Finally, the enchanting spa tucked away in lush gardens and olive groves really could be a destination within itself. It features a beautifully peaceful yoga pavilion, an adults only swimming pool, sauna and steam room, as well as fitness studios for Pilates, spinning, Zumba and boxing. I loved sampling the fresh fruit and vegetable juices after my morning spin class, when I visited the resort in October.
Without a doubt Rancho Valencia would be my number one pick for active families looking for a lively, yet relaxed and luxurious stay in Southern California!
