Los Angeles has a year-round climate. Summer (June - September) is the peak-tourist season, this is when the weather is hottest but beaches can be over crowded. January and February are the rainiest months. If you are visiting in May, June or July, watch out for the 'marine layer', a cloudy overcast, almost fog-like cloud which may affect the beach and first mile or so of the coastal strip, especially in the mornings.

The Hotel Casa Del Mar offers one of the best views in town, with floor to ceiling glass windows overlooking the Pacific coastline. A comfortable setting providing all the glamour of an authentic California beach club, without any of the rules.
Club Casa del Mar opened in 1926 as the hottest address on the Southern California coast - it was the place to see and be seen, renowned for its social scene and frequented by many of the city's elite. Now one of Southern California's most luxurious beachfront hotels; with three extravagant two-story penthouses, a raised deck and pool, and an elegant ballroom facing the sand, Casa del Mar still attracts guests favouring a distinct brand of old-world Hollywood glamour.
Despite dark wood, club-inspired interiors, guest rooms are bright and airy, designed to evoke a grand estate with furnishings like four-poster beds. Contemporary amenities like flat-screen TVs and a movie library are complimented by supremely comfortable beds with sumptuous white linens. Bathrooms are beautiful, with sunken whirlpool tubs and glass-enclosed showers.
The hotel is adjacent to the historic Santa Monica Pier, dynamic Third Street Promenade, the elegant shopping and dining areas of Main Street and Montana Avenue, as well as the gardens, walkways and expansive ocean panoramas of cliff-top Palisades Park.
Hotel Casa del Mar has 129 elegantly appointed guest rooms and suites. Most offer panoramic views of the sand, ocean and the Pacific coastline from Palos Verdes to Malibu and some offer cityscapes of Santa Monica. Each room is well proportioned with stately windows adorned with ivory sateen draperies and high ceilings. The centerpiece, a rich walnut four-poster tester bed, is well accented with luxurious white linens, and the room is finished with thoughtfully chosen artifacts. In addition, each room is also outfitted with the latest technology including a 42-inch LCD flat screen television in the main room as well as a flat screen television in the bathroom, complimentary movies, wireless internet access and an iPod docking station. Three extravagant multi-level Penthouse Suites that are reminiscent of Italian seaside villas feature eclectic Venetian-designed furniture and furnishings, a living room with fireplace, formal dining area, and either one or two bedrooms with separate sitting areas.
Hotel Casa del Mar is the sister property of Nantucket-style beachfront hotel Shutters on the Beach; guests may use the beach club facilities at Shutters on the Beach and charge it back to their hotel account. Hotel Casa del Mar offers excellent two-bedroom configurations that are favoured by families traveling with younger children.
Catch is the hotel's elegant seafood restaurant serving market-fresh seafood, with a pared down selection of meats. Live jazz and contemporary music make Catch the place for weekend brunch. The Veranda is Hotel Casa del Mar's more casual dining and drinking spot offering seasonal small plates, sushi, and live musical entertainment nightly featuring some of the Westside’s best Jazz and R&B performers. Diners at this lobby lounge enjoy impressive views of sand and ocean through 20-foot-high windows, as well as a specialty martini menu and Casa del Mar’s barrel aged cocktails. The Palm Terrace is open to Casa guests only - serving al fresco drinks and light fare with ocean views.
The Sea Wellness Spa offers revitalizing and health-benefiting and signature spa treatments, and a variety of fitness programs for the mind and body. The spa uses luxurious Natura Bissé products from Barcelona along with H. Maloha products.
Within walking distance or a short drive from Hotel Casa del Mar is the eclectic beach resort town of Santa Monica, renowned for its famous pier, fashionable shopping districts, fine restaurants and art galleries. The wide world of Los Angeles lays beyond, with everything from studio tours to high-end shopping to the La Brea Tar Pits to Southern California's best beaches, as well as a celebrated culture all it’s own.
Paul Charles, owner of PCC and former BBC presenter and Global Communications Director at Virgin Atlantic stayed at Casa del Mar in October 2013 and wrote this review.
Sister hotel to the contemporary Shutters on the Beach, and located right next door, the Casa del Mar is the grand dame of Santa Monica. Its palm-tree fringed brick faade makes this an imposing place to stay right on the beach.
The centerpiece is the enormous lounge and bar, with almost floor-to-ceiling windows that shield you from the fitness freaks pounding the pavements outside. This is sunrise and sunset heaven. By day, the lounge is serene and a perfect place to sip coffee and read a book. By night, it comes alive as one of the top evening venues in Santa Monica.
Its atmospheric bar has some of the finest whiskies available, as well as sushi to die for, and the jazz or soul bands playing live each evening give you every reason to settle down for the night. Take dinner in Catch, with its superb fish menu selection.
Casa del Mars 129 bedrooms are purer than white, some with four-poster beds that make it tough to get up in the morning. If you do make it outside, the heavenly pool deck is surrounded by private massage cabanas overlooking the beach and Pacific even a 90-minute treatment is far too short here.
