Average time to visit
Like most California destinations, you can’t go wrong when picking a time of year to visit. Being inland, Napa Valley benefits from much higher summer temperatures than the cool coast, and is a year-round destination but best from April to October.
At the vineyards, September is typically the harvest month, although some varieties may be picked through October and November. Vineyards will be bare from December through February, with new buds returning in March and coming into full bloom by June.
Summer temperatures reach up to around 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, and cool off to about 50 in the evenings, so you’ll want to bring a variety of clothes and dress in layers. Winter highs are around 60 degrees with lows occasionally just below freezing. The region averages around 200 days of sunshine per year, so you should have plenty of good weather to enjoy the outdoors.

If you are a lover of the outdoors but enjoy the luxury of indoor treats then Carneros Resort & Spa is perfect for you. They have finessed the indoor-outdoor living concept; picture old style barns and quaint cottages with rocking chairs on the front porch.
The hospitality was fantastic, upon arrival you are treated to a glass of buttery chardonnay or a fruity pinot noir before being whisked away to your accommodation by friendly staff. All the cottages have a fire place to enjoy after a long day outside, a comfortable sofa and TV, a huge bed and an even bigger shower room. If you are feeling adventurous, have an outdoor shower in the morning to really wake you up in your private garden. The Boon Fly cafe was perfect for a relaxed dining experience with its modern yet rustic cuisine, in keeping with the rest of the hotels ambience. Not only is it popular with the guests but it is also a firm favorite with the locals. I would definitely recommend the cinnamon dusted donuts with dipping chocolate sauce, absolutely delicious! The main pool by hilltop restaurant is one of a kind boasting stunning views over the vineyards - make sure you are there to enjoy a sundowner.
Carneros Resort and Spa has the feel of a little village in the countryside with its wooden slacked buildings, cherry blossom trees and peaceful location surrounded by vineyards. It is the perfect oasis for couples and honeymooners alike spoiled for choice with the endless activities on offer.

My arrival at The Carneros Inn was greeted by a glass of wine and a wonderfully comfortable seat at the front desks in the main building at the top of the property. After a traffic-heavy drive from San Francisco, this was the perfect welcome and I felt instantly relaxed. The main Hilltop building resembles an old-school New England style barn with a contemporary and relaxed style. Directed to my freestanding board-and-batten cottage in the Lee neighborhood (all of which are named after local farming families), I was instantly comforted by the welcoming set of beautifully rustic yet chic rocking chairs on the porch. All of the cottages have private gardens and outdoor showers, many of which have fire pits and some with outdoor soaking tubs, which make for a perfect indoor/outdoor experience. The wood burning fireplace and spacious bathrooms were wonderfully warming and I had great pleasure in ordering some fantastic food from the cottage dining menu which included the best and most delicious portion of gourmet "mac and cheese" that I have ever tasted!
In the morning I was able to enjoy the views of the neighboring vineyards and hilly farmland while meandering through the neighborhoods of cottages - it really did not feel like a resort at all, but more of a quaint village. Sadly, I only had time to try out one of the three on-site restaurants for breakfast but Boon Fly Cafe certainly did not disappoint! Although initially unsure about having donuts with chocolate sauce as my breakfast starter, I was instantly won over and tucked into my delectable Boon Fly Benedict shortly afterwards.
Although this hotel seems to cater very well for couples and honeymooners, it is also equally suitable for families, and even has a designated kids pool with kids deck chairs and poolside activities. The many dining options allow for lots of flexibility and Otto's Snack Shack and the Market at the entrance of the property are perfect to pop into to grab a quick lunch or picnic supplies.
Sadly I was only there for one day but had I stayed longer, I would've taken advantage of the free bicycles to take a journey up through the rows of grape vines, the unspoiled farmland and scenic apple orchards. There is certainly plenty to do and enjoy in this refreshingly contemporary and relaxed Napa Valley resort.
