I arrived in Talkeetna on the Denali star train from Anchorage. It's an amazing ride spotting moose and admiring the scenery from the huge windows. I caught a glimpse of towering Denali on my way, peeking through the clouds. Off the train I was met by Wayne the shuttle driver from Talkeetna Alaskan lodge, originally from Georgia but an Alaskan since 1976. We arrived at the lodge and walked into the lobby dominated by a huge stone fireplace hand built by the local American football team in the 50s and the most incredible views. The lobby Windows and the deck in front look out onto the incredible sight of the entire Alaskan range dominating the horizon and in the very center the indomitable presence of Denali. This humongous piece of rock dwarfs everything in sight and draws people far and wide to climb and just witness what is the tallest mountain in North America.
The lodge itself is light and airy in public areas but in serious need of an update in the rooms. It is the best place in town but nothing to get excited about. Don't worry though your unlikely to spend much time in the room with Talkeetna on your doorstep. Fantastic little town, hippy vibe, stacks of history and some great restaurants to try. Back at the lodge for dinner the food is great and if the sun is shining, a drink or diner out on their huge deck is amazing, you can't turn away from the views.

A large 'alpine style' hotel set over three floors which are arranged around a stunning lobby with central fire and chimney up to the cathedral-height roof. The Lodge boasts stunning views of the Alaskan range, including Mount Denali, the highest peak in North America and provides a good base from which to explore the surrounding area. Rooms are clean and comfortable and, if funds allow, the mountain-view is better than the carpark! The restaurants, which served a buffet breakfast and casual lunch and dinner, looked of a standard one would expect in a good American hotel, but not particularly special or memorable.
Talkeetna is a mile or two distant, so a car or the bus shuttle would be required. The village has a real "last frontier" feel, with small traditional log cabins, a pub which could have been transplanted from England, an excellent pizza restaurant and the "Twister Creek", possibly the best steak restaurant in Alaska (the menu is actually much wider than that) owned by the Denali Brewing Company and offering a beer taster - six or more 4oz glasses of their range of about 20 beers.
A walk down the main street leads to the fast-flowing Susitna river and the best views of Denali. White water rafting can be arranged here. Other trips include bush plane hiking trips and zip-wire circuits.
Devil's Canyon Jet Boat Tour
Board your jet boat ready for a high adventure 130-mile round trip river excursion through Denali State Park and into the Wild River Park of Devil's Gorge.
Talkeetna Ziplining & Canopy Adventure
Speed across a series of ziplines on this three-hour canopy adventure through the forested ridges that sit above the town of Talkeetna and the Susitna River, cross suspension bridges and rappel from the canopy for the most fun way to enjoy the views.
