Insider's View

Indulge in a 'Glacial Facial' at the spa, utilising rich and creamy Arctic mud to soften the skin.

Drive from Anchorage on the scenic byway (Seward Highway) along Turnagain Arm - one of the most scenic routes in the state.

Take a morning hike out to Winner Creek; after a 2.5 mile moderate hike, a hand tram connects you to the trail on the opposite side of Winner Creek gorge. Be on the lookout in the early morning while it is quiet and the trail is not overrun as you may encounter a moose or black bear.

Head into Girdwood on Saturday or Sunday to brunch at Jack Sprat (less than a mile walk/drive from the hotel). They serve a wonderful organic menu from 10am-2:30pm every weekend and it has a great atmosphere.

Ask the concierge for directions to nearby Timberline Road where you can park and take a short walk to a beautiful view of Virgin Creek Falls. Only the locals know about this spot, so it is rarely swamped with visitors.

Set at the furthest inland extent of a grid of roads appropriately named after European ski resorts, Hotel Alyeska has the ambience of a large Alpine hotel. The facilities are typical of those one might have come to expect in the 'lower 48', but are exceptional for Alaska. There is great choice in rooms, interconnectivity etc and the restaurants, particularly the fine dining 'Seven Glaciers' at the top of the cable car are very good. The hotel is said to be busier in summer than winter despite being conceived as the state's premier ski destination. It is not certain there would be sufficient to occupy an adventurous party for more than two or three nights, although there is dog-mushing on the glacier in summer and some hikes on trails, and mountain biking on the mountain-side.
