Manitoba has a subarctic climate with very distinct seasons that have sharp temperature changes. During the winter months, temperatures can be as low as -36 degrees celsius, and in the summer months, temperatures of 36 degrees celsius are not uncommon. The snow is deeper than 1cm for over 130 days of the year, so the region is known for its long winter and snowy conditions. Despite the coldness, skies are often completely clear and due to very low levels of pollution, stargazing and northern lights viewing are excellent nighttime activities.
For a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with majestic polar bears, stay at Dymond Lake Lodge. This remote wilderness lodge offers intimate experiences a with these incredible creatures in Manitoba's pristine bear territory.
Dymond Lake Lodge is a remote fly-in eco-lodge in the very heart of polar bear country. Offering an incredible bear viewing experience, Dymond Lake is one of the world's most unique lodges and provides visitors with up close encounters of a great number of wildlife including polar bears, moose, seals, Arctic and red fox, Arctic hare, wolves and a number of fascinating bird species.
The Great Bear Ice Adventure operates between October and November and is an incredible adventure including daily walking safaris and tundra buggy experiences. These months are arguably the most spectacular to visit, as the polar bears congregate in large numbers on the shores of Hudson Bay as they wait for the water to freeze up for their annual seal hunt. There is plenty of snow on the ground, and seeing the bears amongst this beautiful landscape is a real treat.
Your time at the lodge is mostly spent out on wildlife viewing excursions and these are mostly done on foot, to avoid any impact on the sensitive ecosystem where the lodge is located. There will also be a day spent in Churchill on a tundra buggy with very few people, so the experience is extremely personal and can be tailored.
In the evenings, you can gather round the fireplace to discuss the days activities and share stories of what you have seen and experienced. After a delicious, homemade and hearty dinner, retreat to your cosy guest room for a restful nights sleep, ready for the next days adventure.
The lodge has eight rooms spread over two cosy cabins and each one has an en-suite bathroom. Rooms vary between double, triple and quadruple bed layouts, and so are suitable for families. The decor is what you would expect from a traditional and authentic eco-lodge and allows guests to feel welcome and at home.
Children are welcome at the lodge, but due to the nature of the walking safaris each day, we recommend only children over the age of 8 can visit the lodge.
Even when you aren't out on walking safaris or on the tundra buggy, the lodge has its own viewing tower, so you can still observe bears in their natural habitat from the comfort of the lodge.
There is also a library and gift shop as well as two large seating areas with fireplaces in which to relax at the end of the day.
Head out on the nature trails to engage with the fascinating wildlife that inhabit this vast and remote area. There will also be opportunities to head out on multi-passenger tundra buggy's. You will also be woken in the night should the northern lights make an appearance.
