Description

Hacienda San Jose is a secluded and beautifully restored colonial hacienda outside the Yucatan Peninsula's capital Merida and surrounded by lush tropical jungle and within reach of magnificent Mayan ruins such as Chichen Itza.

Hacienda San Jose, a former grand nobleman's estate, is located 45 minutes from the Yucatan's capital Merida. This gem of a hotel has been restored in a colonial style with stunning pastel blue facades and landscaped gardens.

The 15 rooms have been furnished in a stylish manner evoking the splendour of past eras. Their high ceilings give a spacious feel and their design is an interesting combination of contemporary and traditional styles. The dark, tropical hardwoods of beds and cabinets compliment exposed beams and rafters giving an authentic Mayan ambience.

There is a magnificent swimming pool surrounded by groves of fruit trees and a spa with local Mayan therapists offering traditional healing practices of the Yucatan peninsula to help restore mind, body and soul. At night the stone walls and majestic archways surrounding the hotel’s gourmet restaurant are floodlit to create an intimate dining atmosphere. Here one can enjoy a mouth watering mixture of Mexican and European flavors with many of the ingredients sourced from the haciendas gardens.

Explore the surrounding landscape on horseback or why not visit some of the region's greatest treasures which are within easy reach including the ruins at Uxmal and Chichen Itza and the colonial gem of Izamal.

Accommodation

Almost all guest rooms form part of the fully restored, original buildings that have been adapted to today's needs. Their high ceilings and unique décor evoke the splendour of past eras. A specific restoration project worked to maintain its particular architectural personality by conserving the same spirit that its former owners gave to it. Thus, in some cases, the restoration brings together contemporary and traditional aspects, allowing the new spaces to highlight the artistic and architectural value of the Hacienda's original features.

Most guest rooms feature 18-foot ceilings with exposed beams and rafters, 10-foot wooden double doors, beautiful wooden beds, dark, tropical hardwood cabinets, and cool tile floors. Additionally, large, bulbous pegs in the stonewalls hold woven cotton hammocks, for which Yucatan is famous, allowing you to sleep in the Mayan style.

For an even truer Mayan experience, the Mayan Villas consist of authentic Mayan Palapas transformed into deluxe accommodations. They combine unique Mayan architecture with the modern expectations of today's sophisticated traveler.

Childcare

Children are welcome to come and stay at Hacienda San Jose. However, there are no specific facilities available for them at the hotel.

Facilities

Hacienda San Jose has a spa, swimming pool, Jacuzzi, indoor and outdoor dining, a restaurant and beautiful gardens.

Hacienda San Jose's restaurant is found in the old factory buildings with wonderful views of the main gardens. The menu offers a mix of regional and international cuisine.

Activities

Hacienda San Jose is a remote hacienda so we do recommend prebooking excursions in advance as the highlights of the region are spread out. Visit fascinating Mayan archaeological sites nearby, enjoy a visit to a cenote or head to one of the cultural villages or towns such as Izamal. Or you can make the most of the spa and pool and just have some relaxation time.

Like its sister hacienda hotels - Temozon, Santa Rosa and Uayamon - Hacienda San Jose is a living flashback to days when the Yucatan was a hive of industrial activity, and, wandering around the hotel, it's easy to imagine the time when the hacienda was alive with agriculture, producing sisal, corn, sugarcane, honey, and fruit. (In those days, of course, the tasteful palette of orange hues and powder blues would have been unnecessarily ornate, and the huge sweep of swimming pool largely redundant). Alongside the modern renovation, parts of the Hacienda have been left artfully distressed - ruinous reminders of bygone days - and the manicured rainbow of a garden is encircled by the jungle wilds, creating the feeling that you've stumbled into some kind of lost city - your own private El Dorado.
