Chiapas and the surrounding highlands have a temperate climate, and daytime temperatures generally remain warm all year round. Nights can be pleasantly cool in summer (June-October), but in the winter you’ll be glad there are blankets and fires in the rooms. Nestling in front of an open log fire can be very romantic - just bear in mind the nightly drop in temperature when you book your trip. The rainy season lasts from June to September.

Close to the world-famous Mayan archaeological site of Palenque, the Quinta Chanabnal evokes a Mayan palace complex, and combines traditional pre-Hispanic designs and contemporary sophistication to create an enchantingly romantic boutique hotel.
Set amidst luxuriant jungle, the Quinta Chanabnal fuses historically accurate Mayan designs and twenty-first century comfort to make a small oasis of charm.
The hotel’s seven suites are opulently designed, with terracotta stone floors, wooden furniture and beautiful beds dressed in Egyptian cotton and embroidered silk cushions. Outside balconies look over beautiful grounds abundant with wildlife, and a swimming pool set amongst rocks and cascading waterfalls, while the bathrooms are of marble with pewter mirrors. The Presidential Suite is a bungalow with a pyramid roof of fabulous Mayan sculptures and has a covered veranda with swish wicker chairs, wall art and tropical plants.
The restaurant is intimate and it’s a great place to enjoy a candle-lit dinner of specialty organically raised Chiapas dishes such as lamb in an annatto sauce, or fish wrapped in plantain leaves.
The Quinta Chanabnal is a wonderful base for exploring the extraordinary site of Palenque, mystically shrouded in the rainforest, and you can easily include visits to other Mayan sites such as Bonampak and Yaxchilan, or visit the mysteriously blue waters of Agua Azul. The hotel also has a temazcal or Mayan sweat lodge, where you can cleanse yourself in the steam created from hot stones and herbal waters, or have a clay body rub.
The Quinta Chanabnal has four Deluxe Suites, two Junior Suites and a fabulous Presidential Suite, all with outside verandahs offerning tropical views and they are opulently designed.
Children of all ages are welcome and all rooms can fit extra beds or cots. One of the Deluxe Suites in the main building is suitable for families as it has two double beds (as does one of the Junior Suites) and an indoor sitting area, but both Junior and Deluxe Suites can take additional people, either on rollaway beds or in an extra king size bed which can be placed in the room.
The hotel has a swimming pool, restaurant and bar, a small library, spa treatments and temazcal, and there is Wi-Fi access too.
Tours of Palenque, or further afield to Bonampak and Yaxchilan; you can also visit Agua Azul and Misol-Ha easily from Palenque. The surrounding areas are also great for bird watching.

Hidden in the jungle and created by owner and General Manager Raphael, Quinta Chanabnal is a boutique hotel which encapsulates the Mayan spirit. The design of the hotel is modelled on a Royal residence where palapas have large thatched roofs and rooms have high ceilings, open spaces and bright colors. Ancient scripts swirl in the reception area, and meals have been influenced by the Mayan cuisine. The jungle here is a real highlight and home to a family of howler monkeys, turtles, a crocodile and an array of exotic birds including the mot mot which is the sacred bird of the Mayan world. Walking around the grounds you feel totally immersed in nature where the only sounds are that of bird song and insects. The service is very warm and I felt very well looked after. Located only five miles from the ruins of Palenque it is an ideal base to explore the ruins and is the best option in the area. My only fault is that I didn't stay long enough to enjoy the warmth and beauty of the hotel.
