Situated just a few blocks from the zocalo in historic Puebla, a city teeming with fantastic regional foods, the Meson Sacristia de la Compania is the place to stay if you want to try your hand at re-creating the extraordinary signature dish of the city, the famous mole poblano created from a bewildering and magical blend of spices.
This seductively beautiful and friendly hotel is as much a feast for the senses as the city outside, and is very small with just eight individual suites, richly decorated with wonderful antiques, and very intimate in feel. As you step off the street, you enter an atmosphere that transports you to a Mexico of the nineteenth century. Doors have been beautifully framed with Talavera tiles and gold leaf detailing, and there is a beautiful courtyard. The Espinosa Family, owners of the Hotel, have dedicated themselves to the antique trade for generations, and the pieces in the hotel are all for sale.
Fantastic shopping aside, the hotel´s traditional Pueblan cuisine is superb, and dining at the award-winning courtyard restaurant with its daily live music is an experience of colonial Mexico at its best. The hotel’s cookery classes are justly famed, and workshops from one to six days can be arranged.

When to go
At this altitude (2240m above sea level), Mexico City and its surroundings rarely get too hot therefore can be enjoyed at any time of year. The hotter months of May and June, and the rainy season (June-September), when the capital experiences a downpour most afternoons may want to be avoided. Pollution is in maximum effect in the hot, dry season of spring, from late February to early May. Busy times include the MACO Contemporary Arts Festival (April), the Pride march (late June), the Cake Festival (August) and Fashion Week (October).
