Just an hour from the glitzy developments of Los Cabos in southern Baja is the artists' colony of Todos Santos. This oasis, bordered by unspoiled beaches on one side and the peaks of the Sierra de la Laguna on the other, is the location of the colonial boutique hotel Guaycura.
Hotel Guaycura offers 14 charming rooms and sweeping views of the mountains and the Pacific Ocean from its roof terrace and pool. It is housed in a mid-19th-century building that has, at various times, been the town’s school, post office, police station and a ladies’ art academy. Today the town attracts travelers looking to experience authentic Baja California.
A family owned and run hotel, Guaycura has an atmosphere that is homely but refined, with terracotta floors, dark wood furniture, ceiling frescoes and oversized arched windows. The hotel boasts a wonderful restaurant, El Jardin, where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is also a shaded courtyard and bar on the lower floor which feels like a relaxing oasis.
The hotel is located just one mile from the nearest beach and the ocean can be seen from the hotel's roof top. Guaycura's beach club, El Faro, is just 3 miles from the hotel, where you'll find everything you need for a lazy day with an ocean breeze and the hotel provides a shuttle service to and from the club for their guests. El Mirador, their hillside restaurant is also located just up the hill from the beach club, and grey whales can be seen in the waters during the right season.
The 14 guest rooms at Hotel Guaycura all feature canopied beds and elaborate iron headboards, while plasma TVs, air-conditioning, Wi-Fi and Egyptian cotton bedding provide contemporary comfort. Classic Rooms look out onto the streets of Todos Santos, while Deluxe Rooms overlook the hotel’s traditional courtyard. Both have spacious bathrooms with antique copper basins and L’Occitane products. There are connecting options for families with deluxe rooms and suites offering spacious combinations.
Children 10 years old and younger stay free when sharing their parents' room, using existing bedding. Connecting/adjoining rooms may be requested and babysitting services can be requested. Please note that the roof top pool is not suitable for children under the age of 12 years.
Chef Alejandro Aran oversees the popular El Jardin courtyard restaurant, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menus feature mainly Mediterranean seafood dishes — with an inventive Mexican twist — and ingredients are local and organic where possible. Small dishes and cocktails are also served at the Sky Lounge, a rooftop terrace with a small pool, a space for al fresco massages and sweeping views of the Pacific. Be sure to watch the inky sunsets with a cocktail in hand. There’s also a lively bar downstairs.
The hotel's spa offers organic treatments based on exotic fruits to help you feel relaxed and revived. The spa is complete with a marble steam room and Jacuzzi for further indulgence.
Most visitors to southern Baja spend their days outdoors, and Guaycura has a large palapa (an open-sided beach shack) overlooking a two-mile stretch of beach at Cala de Ulloa, a short 20-minute drive from the hotel.
While here, be sure to enjoy the small spa with its organic treatments. The hotel also has an L-shaped roof top pool for relaxing with a view. While in Todos Santos, go gallery-hopping in town, enjoy a boat trip that will take you into the best whale watching areas on the planet, take a day trip to snorkel the Espiritu Santo islands off La Paz or take a hike in the mountainous interior. There are also horseback riding, kayaking, surfing, fishing and desert ATV trips.
A shuttle service runs between the hotel and El Faro Beach Club, the transfer is approx. 20 minutes due the remote desert roads that run down to the coast, albeit only 3 miles away. The El Mirador Restaurant offers dining with a view, located at Old Punta Lobos Road, just up this hill from the beach club.

When to go
Baja California is a rare destination that offers a great getaway year long. Peak time for travel is when weather is temperate in the low 20ºc range and whale watching opportunities are at their best (late-November to April). This also includes the festive vacation and New Year period. Cool temperatures are ideal for desert adventures and hiking and boating for wildlife viewing and island exploration. Summer (April to September) can be hot and humid but the beaches are less crowded. Summer waters are ideal for snorkeling and diving. Hurricanes are much less common than in the Caribbean, but it is something to be aware of for September and October travel which is considered low season.
Baja is blessed with two marine life rich oceans; the Sea of Cortez to the east has a warmer sea temperature than the more exposed than the Pacific Ocean to the west.
Todos Santos makes a good base for surf trips, in the winter (Nov-March) the best breaks are south of Todos Santos at Cerritos Beach. This is a 15-minute drive from Guaycura. Todos Santos attracts lots of surfers who enjoy the restaurants and gentle nightlife of the town with easy access to the beach each day.
