Villa Blanca Hotel & Spa is a characterful lodge set in some of the most spectacular cloud forest in Costa Rica and conveniently located just 60km from San Jose offering comfortable accommodation and great outdoor excursions amid breathtaking scenery.
Villa Blanca Cloud Forest Hotel and Spa is a 75-acre hotel surrounded by the spectacular Los Angeles Private Biological Reserve in the picturesque rolling hills of Costa Rica's Central Highlands, just above the cultural city of San Ramon.
The hotel has 35 individual well-appointed, but simple casitas (5 are individual honeymoon casitas). Staying at Villa Blanca is like stepping back in time to a quaint Costa Rican farm village. On the main hilltop, the Hacienda house, serves fresh baked breads, pastries and country-style dining using ingredients from its own greenhouses and dairy products from a local dairy herd (which you can also help milk by hand). There is also a bar and comfortable sitting areas with fireplaces. There is a TV and games room with spectacular views towards the volcanoes and a small cinema.
Adjacent to the lodge are 11km of well-marked trails through the Los Angeles Cloud Forest Reserve. A short walk takes guests to the hummingbird gallery where several species come to feed. The hotel's guides take guests on morning bird watching tours and nocturnal nature walks and the Jose Miguel Alfaro’s research station educates guests about local wildlife.
There is yoga pavilion with a sauna and jacuzzi and wellness spa.
In the surrounding region you can also horse ride, book a thrilling zipline adventure, visit hanging bridges and go on a guided nature walks and volcano excursions. The Cloud Forest surrounding the property hosts a similar inventory of flora and fauna found in habitats such as Monteverde, yet with only a fraction of the driving time from San Jose International Airport.
The casitas at Villa Blanca actually form a small village typical of the epoch in Costa Rica’s history when the region was expanding its reach into the world of international agriculture and commerce as it maintained its connection to the land and resources that still define it today. From charming single deluxe villas to romantic honeymoon suites, Villa Blanca hotel accommodations feature cane ceilings and ceiling fans, elegantly hand-crafted furniture and a variety of convenience amenities that also include fireplaces, private porches and in-room whirlpool tubs in many of the rooms.
Children are welcome to come and stay at Villa Blanca Cloud Forest Hotel and Spa. However, there are no specific facilities available for them at the villa. Families can stay in the superior casitas which connect or two adjacent deluxe casitas. Nature loving kids will enjoy the bug collection and animal exhibits at the research center and helping to milk the local dairy cows.
Facilities at Villa Blanca include a yoga pavilion, Jacuzzi and sauna, spa, bar and restaurant serving Costa Rican country style cuisine most of which is grown or produced locally. There is a TV and games room with spectacular views towards the volcanoes and a small cinema.
Activities at Villa Blanca include self-guided hiking trails through the forest and visits to the plant nurseries and greenhouses, the Lecheria where you can help milk the cows by hand, and the Jose Miguel Alfaro Research Station and hummingbird gallery. In the surrounding region you can also horse ride, book a thrilling zipline adventure, visit hanging bridges and go on a guided nature walks and volcano excursions.

The first thing you take in as you drive up to Villa Blanca are the sweeping views of the rolling green hills encased in cloud. Villa Blanca is located up in the cloud forest north of San Jose which makes for great bird watching, a nature lovers paradise. We had a tour of the extensive grounds, including the dairy and the Chapel, with its hundreds and hundreds of hand-painted tiles on the ceiling which is quite a marvel and pretty unique. My top tip if you have kids would be to visit the dairy and have a go at milking a cow! Also worth a visit is the hummingbird gallery; these beautiful birds congregate around a feeding station off one of the many walking trails not far from the hotel. Quite fascinating to watch!
This plush mountain-retreat hotel consists of a series of Tico-style casitas surrounded by 800 hectares (1,976 acres) of farm and forest. Each casita is built of adobe and has tile floors, open beamed ceilings, and whitewashed walls. Inside you'll find a fireplace in one corner, comfortable hardwood chairs, and either one queen-size or two twin beds covered with colorful bedspreads. The deluxe units and suites have a separate sitting area with a fold-out couch and bathrooms with a whirlpool bathtub and a separate shower. In many rooms the bathroom tubs look out through a wall of windows onto lush gardens. Some have private patios. Movies are projected nightly on a screen in their THX theater. Just outside are 11km (6.75 miles) of trails through the Los Angeles Cloud Forest Reserve. You can also rent horses or take an adventurous swing through the canopy on a canopy tour here.
Villablanca is off the beaten track, but it is relatively close to San José, and if you're interested in bird-watching or exploring a cloud forest and want to avoid the crowds of Monteverde, this is a good choice.
Rio Celeste & Volcano Hike
Witness the unearthly blue color of the Rio Celeste as you take a rainforest hike in Tenorio Volcano National Park. Geological oddities and the Rio Celeste waterfalls are additional fascinations.
