The summer season in Costa Rica (December to April), also called the 'dry' season, doesn't necessarily mean no rain but there should be less of it and it is the optimum time to visit. The 'green' season (May to November) can still be a good time to visit and you can avoid the tourist bustle and lodging is slightly cheaper. Mornings tend to be sunny with afternoon and evening showers. During this time, however, rivers start to swell and dirt roads get muddy, making travel more challenging.

The most luxurious property in Costa Rica, this boutique hotel offers spacious, contemporary, haciendas that ooze sophistication and indulgence. Built up like a small village on the Perez Zeledon mountains, Alta Gracia offers a completely private, and relaxing stay in one of the lesser seen, but more beautiful areas of the country. A great place to end a high adrenaline trip, with a stint of complete relaxation and contemporary refinement, with their extensive spa facilities, impeccable service and incredible food in all restaurants. A quirky but wonderful feature of the hotel is it's top of the range stables, and some of the best horses in the country. A pleasure to visit and see the horses even if you don't feel like riding.

Alta Gracia is such a luxurious hotel it almost feels out of place in such a humble country. The rooms are all huge and freestanding with wonderful views over the surrounding valleys and hills. Its a real retreat, somewhere to relax, unwind and spoil yourself with incredible food, wonderful wines on offer and a truly incredible spa. It reminded me a lot of an uber-luxurious estancia in Argentina or the palatial wine estates of Tuscany. The focus is really on the magnificent horses and stables and for anyone who enjoys riding it is a must do when in Costa Rica. Im not a huge rider but certainly enjoyed myself and earned my time soothing my aching muscles in the spa. Besides horses the other passion of the owners is aviation and the hotel has its own small airstrip and microlights for flying out over the surrounding countryside all the way to the coast. I would really recommend the resort to anyone looking to unwind, detox (or retox on the food and wine) and generally pamper and refresh after a busy time seeing everything that Costa Rica has to offer.

This was an unforgettable stay, in a beautiful location. High up in the hills, the views just take your breath away. I stayed in a Premium Casita, and had breakfast on the terrace one morning with the birds chirping around me, which I can highly recommend.
The attention to detail in this hotel was so impressive, the staff seem to anticipate your every need and nothing is too much trouble. The food prepared by their Master Chef was delicious - Costa Rican with Asian influences.
It really was a great place to unwind and relax, everything was taken care of for us, so we could focus on just having a great time. Top choice for total luxury.
