Playa Cativo’s wooden plantation-style design compliments the natural surroundings of the rainforest, stunning tropical grounds and remote oceanfront setting. Set on an 1000 acre private property which is only accessible by boat the exclusive eco lodge has the feeling of a private home and offers seven beautiful guest rooms, including an inviting private casita nestled close to the beach, Chef Victor prepares inspiring Costa Rican dishes using produce from the lodge’s garden and expert guides are on hand to organize ocean and rainforest experiences.
During your stay you will have the opportunity to take part in plenty of adventurous activities such as hiking in the Piedras Blancas National Park, self-guided walks, nature tours, fishing, sea kayaking, whale and dolphin watching, nocturnal rainforest expedition, snorkeling and stand up paddle boarding. The different eco-systems, including mangroves, allow guests to consistently observe a large and diverse variety of birds and animals in a relatively small area and it’s common to see and hear Howler and white-faced monkeys and Scarlet Macaws around the lodge.
For those looking for relaxation, the sandy beach by the lodge is wonderful to retreat to or the inviting fresh-water swimming pool and gardens or yoga platform surrounded by the sights and sounds of jungle and lapping ocean. The waters in front of the Lodge are also part of the protected area and home to the needlefish spawning which occurs every month for three days.
Playa Cativo has seven elegant guest rooms, which are divided into three different categories; deluxe, luxury and premium according to their location and size. All of them are beautifully furnished in colonial plantation style and have a King bed plus a day bed which can be made up for an extra child or adult. Screens are drawn back during the day so that the rooms are totally open and drawn back at dusk. The bathrooms showcase hand-painted tiles and sinks and have rain showers with hot water supply. Ventilation is provided by ceiling fans and the natural sea breezes. For honeymoon couples the free-standing casita is the most romantic, nestled in the gardens. Wi-Fi and safety boxes.
Luxury guest rooms have all the amenities the deluxe rooms have along with superior ocean views and more space.
Premium guest rooms are even larger than luxury rooms and have the same amenities. Moreover, they feature a mini-bar with refrigerator, double sink bathroom and breathtaking vistas.
Children over the age of 12 are welcome at the lodge but there are no specific facilities available and none of the rooms connect but most rooms sleep three and the Premium rooms can sleep four. The lodge is only accessible by boat and so we recommend it more for older children or teenagers.
The lodge is designed in open-plan plantation style and entirely constructed from local hardwoods and furnished with locally produced furniture and artworks. There is a comfortable open-air sitting/dining room, an air-conditioned library with a TV and computers. There is wi-fi throughout the lodge. There is an outdoor swimming pool, kayaks, stand up paddle boards to borrow and a yoga platform set in the peace of the forest.
Playa Cativo can organize a whole host of exciting activities. Guests can borrow stand up paddle boards, kayaks and snorkeling equipment and all stays include the choice of one guided tour. In addition there are marked trails to follow including one to a waterfall and expert naturalist guides are on hand for early morning and sunset bird-watching, kayaking tours through the mangroves, dolphin and whale watching trips (humpback whales come to give birth in the calm waters of Golfo Dulce from June to September).
Playa Cativo provides a perfect and peaceful yoga retreat where guests can relax and renew the body and spirit in a tranquil beachfront setting. After a long hike or other rigorous exercise, enjoy a relaxing massage in the privacy of your room or in the beautiful gardens.
Location & Directions
Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica
Playa Cativo is located on the Golfo Dulce in southwestern Costa Rica. Accessible only by boat, its 1000 acres of private rainforest reserve are surrounded by Piedras Blancas National Park, a natural corridor between La Amistad and Corcovado National Parks.
When to go
The best time for wildlife viewing in southern Costa Rica is in the 'drier' season from November to April. May to December is the 'green season' when it rains more than the rest of the year. However, this is rainforest so it can rain at any time. October tends to be the wettest month, the creeks rise and roads can be impassable. Costa Rica is incredibly popular over Christmas, New Year and peak vacations so we recommend booking well in advance.
