Description

Lapa Rios Eco Lodge, set in Central America’s last remaining lowland tropical forest, is the perfect hideaway for guests looking for comfortable and eco-friendly lodging, incredible wildlife viewing, a romantic setting, innovative cuisine and a wide range of wonderful outdoor excursions.

There is abundant wildlife and the private reserve offers excellent opportunities to see thousands of species of trees, plants, birds (over 300 bird species identified), insects and mammals, particular favorites being the Scarlet macaws, toucans and monkeys. Many excursions within the reserve are included during your stay lead by a team of expert naturalist guides. There are plenty of activities to choose from such as bird watching tours, night walks and nature hikes where you’ll encounter miles of private, un crowded trails in prime rainforest home to wild waterfalls and pristine beaches. Costa Rica has the longest humpback whale watching season in the world (August-October) so catching a glimpse of these magnificent marine mammals is more than likely and dolphins are regular visitors to the bay. Other activities in the area include zip-lines, waterfall rappelling, kayaking, surf and stand up paddle board lessons, horseback riding and community tours.

The 17 individual thatched cabins with hand-made bamboo and teak furniture, are dotted around the property and boast enormous private decks with a double hammock and outdoor showers looking out over the forest canopy and ocean. All meals are included and are eaten in the spacious main lodge.

Accommodation

The seventeen bungalows are nestled within the rain forest and look out towards the Pacific Ocean. There are two bungalows closer to the main lodge which are wheelchair accessible and the others are spread out down the hillside. Some have two queen beds and others a king bed. The bungalows are beautifully but simply designed with the environment in mind – the walls are screened and sea breezes and ceiling fans provide ventilation. There is a huge deck with a hammock, sunbeds and open air bathroom with breathtaking views of the forest canopy and ocean below. There is no wi-fi or telephone connection.

Childcare

Children are welcome at Lapa Rios, however due to the close contact with nature, the spread out of the rooms and the physical nature of the hikes and excursions we would recommend it for children 10 years and above. They do not have any babysitting services available. None of the rooms connect but an extra bed can be added to most King bedded rooms (although these are the furthest from the main lodge) or a family of four with children who are happy to share a bed can take one of the bungalows with two queen beds.

Facilities

Lapa Rios features a main thatched palapa-syle lodge with a restaurant, bar, library area and observation tower. There is a refreshing outdoor pool. There is no internet or telephones so guests feel totally disconnected and immersed in nature. A couple of beaches are within a short drive or 10 minute walk from the lodge, though these are most suited to surfers

Activities

Given its privileged beach and rainforest location there is a long list of activities. There is abundant wildlife and the private reserve offers excellent opportunities to see thousands of species of trees, plants, birds (over 300 bird species identified), insects and mammals, particular favorites being the Scarlet macaws, toucans and monkeys. Many excursions within the reserve are included during your stay lead by a team of expert naturalist guides and take place in small groups. There are plenty of activities to choose from such as bird watching tours, night walks and nature hikes where you’ll encounter miles of private, uncrowded trails in prime rainforest home to wild waterfalls and pristine beaches. Costa Rica has the longest humpback whale watching season in the world (August-October) so catching a glimpse of these magnificent marine mammals on a boat tour is more than likely and dolphins are regular visitors to the bay. Other activities in the area at additional cost include ziplines, waterfall rapelling, kayaking, surf and stand up paddle board lessons, horseback riding and community tours.

Location & Directions

Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica

Lapa Rios is 18km south of Puerto Jiménez at Playa Carbonera, on the south-eastern tip of the Osa Peninsula, on the south end of Costa Rica's Pacific coast.

When to go

From May to December it's the 'green season' when it rains more than the rest of the year, it can sometimes rain for 3 days in a row. However, this is rainforest and walking in the rain doesn't ruin the experience. October is the wettest month, the creeks rise and roads can be impassable. There are few people staying at Lapa Rios, though, so it’s much more intimate. January to April are the drier months, when it’s idyllic here. The busiest time of year is the second half of December, when you need to book well in advance.
