Description

Amanera is arranged on a hillside in tiers and has been related to an amphitheater, the golden sands and aquamarine waters of the Dominican Republic below; its stage. Its name comes from "era" a Taino (indigenous people of the Caribbean) word which translates to water, an apt ending to the name of a resort which looks to the ocean. Secluded in 2,000 acres of ancient jungle and landscaped gardens, Amanera is surrounded by a landscape comprising green hills and provincial towns waiting to be explored.

Through its tiered layout, all 25 of Amanera's residences afford panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, private gardens with access paths and terraces and some their own swimming pool. Closest to the beach, The Amanera Casita and Bay View Casa have the finest views, the latter is the largest residence with two separate bedrooms and its own infinity pool. Further up the hillside, Bay View Casitas and Hill Casitas are located and close to the main lodge where a further two Casitas are located.

This is the first Aman resort to be combined with a golf course, one that boasts the most ocean side holes in the western hemisphere and therefore some of the best views on the green. However if this is not your game, try watersports, horse riding on the beach, a trip to the Spa or merely laying in a hammock by the Club de Playa where barefoot dining is encouraged.

For more formal options, at the heart of the resort is the Casa Grande an impressively constructed main lodge above a three tiered water-feature where you can find the open air bar, lounge, library and cigar bar and the signature restaurant which uses the freshest local ingredients. The layout of this part of the resort means the curved main swimming pool elegantly cascades around dining areas with the option of a pavilion for a more intimate venue.

Accommodation

There are six residence categories available at Amanera, two are exclusive residences and one of these is a two bedroom option. Private swimming pools are available in all but the Casita and Hill Casita categories. All residences maximize views of the ocean through indoor and outdoor living space, floor-to-ceiling windows and bio-diverse roofs so as to blend into the surrounding jungle. Inside, Dominican art and local materials are found alongside Aman standard furnishings, king-size beds and the latest technological amenities. Amanera residences are fitted with televisions that rise from the floor when in use, WiFi, sound system, safe and personal bar.

Facilities

The adjoining Playa Grande Golf Course may feature highly on some guests' agenda, however for others Amanera, like all Aman resorts, has a premier selection of facilities for guests to use during their stay. Above a three-tiered water-feature and offering incredible views of the jungle, ocean and golf course is the Casa Grande, home to the signature restaurant, cigar bar, library, lounge and open-air bar. Guests can dine by the main curved swimming pool or more intimately in a pavilion near by. A Spa offers signature treatments, a gym and a wellness center featuring a steam room, sauna and relaxation room.

Activities

During a stay at Amanera, there are many activities on offer including opportunities to dance Merengue, a traditional dance which is popular throughout the Caribbean. You may wish to explore the surrounding area and make use of the beach where kite-surfing, deep-sea fishing, watersports and horseback riding are on offer, or just lounge in a hammock or on a daybed by the pool.

Location & Directions

Playa Grande, Dominican Republic

Amanera is located in the Caribbean on the North coast of the Dominican Republic above the immaculate Playa Grande beach.

When to go

Offering warm temperatures throughout the year the Caribbean is a perfect year round destination. With an average of 9 hours sunshine a day the peak season runs from December through to April which is the dry season when you can expect very little rainfall. May to November are the slightly wetter months where you will find an increase in rainfall as the summer season goes on and with that some humidity, however the Summer months are still a great time to travel as the temperatures are hot and the rain tends to come in short heavy bursts but not all day long. The wettest months with the most humidity are September and October and these are the most probable months for hurricanes to occur in the region although many islands have not experienced hurricanes for a number of years. The average daily temperatures range from the mid-seventies in the winter months and mid-eighties in the summertime.
