Gonarezhou is owned and managed by Ant and Rawana Kaschula. Ant first visited Gonarezhou in 1993, and was immediately captivated by the spectacular scenery and incredible wildlife sightings he experienced in this huge wilderness. Ant, a Zimbabwean professional licensed guide has been leading safaris throughout the continent for nearly 15 years, he and Rawana, of Kenyan descent, have been operating their camp in Gonarezhou since 2010, the two of them are on a crusade to promote tourism into this forgotten and extraordinary area of Zimbabwe.
In the south eastern corner of Zimbabwe, Gonarezhou National Park covers a vast area of 5,000 square kilometers. Apart from a National Park lodge, Ant and Rawana offer the only accommodation option within the park and are the only operator licensed to conduct walking safaris here.
Gonarezhou means "The place of many elephants", the estimated population is in excess of 7,000 and sightings of huge bulls - Gonarezhou's Grey Ghosts - are not uncommon. The park is truly 'off the beaten track', it is seldom visited by tourists and this has helped it retain an atmosphere of true wilderness.
Due to the mobile safari style, the camp does not have some of the luxuries of a permanent safari camp, however, this does not mean that attention to detail, service, wholesome meals and comfortable beds have been forgotten here.
The camp sleeps a maximum of ten guests in canvas dome tents. The tents are complete with twin beds, a bedside table and LED lighting. At the front of each tent is a small front verandah with chairs and a wash basin. Each tent has a bucket shower and there's a loo tent a little way behind.
3x3 meter dome tent.
Children of all ages are welcome at Gonarezhou Bush Camp. Ant and Rawana have a young family, their children often accompany them in the bush. It should be noted that this is a big game destination where activities do focus on walking so we would recommend Gonarezhou to children over the age of 12 to ensure they get the most from the experience.
Gonarezhou is a classic mobile bush camp, there is no swimming pool, spa or 'bush boutique', the experience and the environment is the focus here. The important necessities have in no way been overlooked: comfortable beds, hot showers and clean ablutions await guests after a long day in the bush. Meals are freshly prepared and delicious, there is no shortage of hot and cold drinks.
The road network in the park is extremely limited, as the only operator licensed to conduct walking safaris in Gonarezhou National Park this is the activity that features most prominently in a stay. Ant is a fantastic walking guide with years of experience throughout the wild places of Africa, walking with him in his favorite place on the continent is an incredible experience.
Game drives are also offered in open Toyota Landcruisers seating up to nine passengers. Other activites include sport fishing for tiger fish, bream and tilapia, fly camping in the bush and multi-day walking safaris.
