Potato Bush Camp is an exceptionally exclusive and luxurious tented safari camp with four tents made of canvas and rosewood with a contemporary African design and a real feel of raw beauty to them. Raised wooden walkways link the entire camp, increasing the feeling of safety for guests, and allowing them an easy path from their tents to the open plan dining, bar and lounge area. These raised wooden walkways are also of great help in that they enable the camp to stay open from the 1st of April through to early January, when the rains just get too heavy. The only place in the camp where your feet really touch the ground is around the camp fire, which is positioned out in the open under the stars, right on the edge of the river bank.

Activities at Potato Bush camp are excellent and varied, assuring that guests never get bored. Game Drives through the Lower Zambezi National Park are a great way to see a huge variety of wildlife in this beautiful unspoiled wilderness. This is also the best way to achieve an 'up close and personal' experience. Then for those that wish to search for the slightly more elusive nocturnal animals there are also night drives, allowing you the opportunity to look for creatures such as Genet, Civet, Porcupines and the Giant Eagle Owl. The night's sky will also be at its most impressive and your guide can point you out all the Southern constellations.

As one of the few camps privileged enough to be based inside the National Park, Potato Bush Camp is also able to offer canoeing down one of the most beautiful stretches of the Zambezi River, the 14km long Chifungulu Channel which begins just 100m downstream of the camp. By canoe you can explore the banks of the river from an entirely different perspective, looking up from water level whilst drifting downstream listening to the hundreds of bird calls and the sound of the river.

Another even more comfortable way to view the game from the river is to take a scenic boat cruise, watching the animals that come down to the river to drink and bathe, and marvelling at all of the unique water wildlife such as the huge hippopotami pods and crocodile populations. From the boat you can also enjoy spectacular African sunsets, whilst drifting gently on the water enjoying floating sundowners.

Then last but by no means least, the camp offers incredible walking safaris; the ideal way to learn about the smaller creatures, trees and plants, and all of the different track and signs. Zambia was the birthplace of walking safaris and remains the best place in the world for them.

Then for those that are in search of sport rather than game viewing the Zambezi River is host to some of the most spectacular fresh water sport fishing in the world. The infamous Tigerfish is probably the most popular quarry here, with large carnivorous teeth the Tigerfish can grow up to 15kg and are renowned for their fighting spirit and strength. The camp supplies all fishing equipment and has expert fishing guides and a range of boats to suit all enthusiasts.

3 safari tents and one 2-bedroom family tent. All have en-suite bathrooms with a twin shower, bath, his and her basins and a flushing toilet. Each tent also has a private deck and plunge pool. The family tent also comes with its own central living and dining area, making it a great tents for families or for a group.

Children over the age of 4 are welcome at Potato Bush Camp although certain activities such as canoeing and walking safaris are age restricted.

Location & Directions

Lower Zambezi, Zambia

Potato Bush Camp is set on the banks of the Zambezi River in the heart of the Lower Zambezi National Park. The camp overlooks an expanse of narrow channels and low set reed islands teeming with game, with the magnificent Zambezi escarpment as the backdrop.

When to go

The Lower Zambezi has a moderate to sub-tropical climate with three distinct seasons: from November to March is the Emerald, or the rainy season, April to July is Zambia's winter, when the weather is cool and dry, and August to October is summer, when the weather is hot and dry. In terms of game viewing, the drier months, meaning a higher concentration of game at the permanent water sources, are a superb time to visit. Alternatively come for some superb bird watching at the end of the rains.
