Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The main time to visit the Liuwa Plain is between August and December, the drier months of the year, where access is possible. As the dry season wears on, game-viewing becomes even more rewarding as the grass is trampled and grazed lower, and wildlife concentrates around water sources. In November, the rains begin, short and sharp, with dramatic cloud formations and storms in the late afternoon. Around this time of year, the pans burst into life with flowers carpeting the ground. It's also an exciting time of year wildlife-wise, as herds of blue wildebeest move in on their annual migration from Angola. From December to April, the plains are in flood, causing problems for access for visitors, but providing life to the wildlife that remains here year-round.

Insider's View

Travel in November and December to witness the migration of blue wildebeest arriving from Angola.

Liuwa is wild and untouched, a vast flat wilderness that stretches for miles with not even a tree in sight!

Hyena sightings are fascinating here, with some clans numbering more than 50, making them a dominant predator

In April you may catch sight of the Kuomboka ceremony where the Lozi king is floated from his lowland residence to his highland residence, right through the park, an ancient and unique tradition

The latest addition to the Norman Carr Safaris family, King Lewanika is a luxurious lodge located in the heart of the remote Liuwa Plain in western Zambia. King Lewanika offers a unique opportunity to explore this unspoilt park.

The Liuwa Plain is a truly untouched wilderness area, located in the far reaches of western Zambia. To connoisseur safari-goers, it is one of Africa's ultimate safari destinations and previously the only access was on a set departure mobile safari. King Lewanika Lodge is an exciting new addition, opening up this wild and wonderful national park, offering a permanent and luxurious lodge from which to explore, designed by the same acclaimed architects who created sister camp Chinzombo.

Liuwa's wildlife includes large herds of blue wildebeest which migrate in from neighbouring Angola, lion, wild dog, hyena and a wide variety of antelope including red lechwe, oribi and roan. The park also boasts some superb birding opportunities, particularly in the rains when large flocks of migratory species arrive. The vast scale of the park, covering 3,660m² means you sometimes need to drive some distance to find the game, but the rewards are great, knowing you are one of a tiny handful of intrepid travellers to have witnessed a sighting.

The camp itself has six luxurious villas, one of which is a family villa. Set along the edge of the plains with beautiful trees, each villa is spacious and private. The design is modern and sleek, and the rooms are open fronted to make the most of the views. Each villa has a lounge area, open plan bathroom and outdoor shower, as well as a terrace with a canvas canopy providing shade. King Lewanika Lodge is a pioneering camp in so many ways, and offers a luxurious base for exploring this rewarding national park.
