The Winelands are a wonderful year-round destination and enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, somewhat like the South of France, which is what makes the area perfect for grape-growing. Summer in Franschhoek is the reverse of the Northern hemisphere. The best season visit is September to March when it is hot, sunny and dry. From April to August it cools down with some rain.

Leeu House is a stylish and luxurious small hotel in a central location in the Cape Winelands town of Franschhoek. There are just twelve rooms, each classic in their design but with plenty of mod con's including underfloor heating in the bathroom, Nespresso coffee machine and complimentary mini bar. A traditional Cape Dutch farm building is the focal point of the hotel, with pretty gardens and artwork including two striking bronzes featuring Gandhi and Mandela on the front lawn. The location on the main street in Franschhoek means you're a short stroll away from charming shops, cafes, art galleries and restaurants.
Dining is of course a real highlight here, as with much of this region of South Africa. Executive chef Oliver Cattermole creates innovative dishes using the best in local organic and ethically farmed produce, served in the Conservatory or out on the terrace. Meals are accompanied by a selection of fine South African wines including the estate's vintages. For more casual fare, head to the next door Tuk Tuk craft brewery for snacks and local brews, or further down the road to the sister property Le Quartier Francais to the renowned Tasting Room restaurant for more fine dining.
There are pretty gardens and a heated swimming pool where you can relax when not out exploring the town or nearby wine estates. Guests at Leeu House can also enjoy the facilities at sister property Leeu Estates on the edge of town, where you'll find more dining options, a beautiful spa, gym facilities and the Mullineux & Leeu wine tasting room, all set amongst beautiful landscaped gardens with bronze sculptures.
There are twelve rooms, split into four categories - Classic, Deluxe, Deluxe with terrace and Grande Suite with terrace. Each room is luxuriously appointed, in a contemporary classic style, with neutral colors. All rooms are air-conditioned and have underfloor heating in the bathroom and come with high speed WiFi access, high definition flat screen television, iPad on request, electronic safe and Nespresso coffee machine.
The four Classic rooms measure 35 m² and two have bathtubs and showers, whilst two have showers only. I loved Leeu House's central location in the pretty town of Fraanchoek. It was fantastic to be able to walk across the road for dinner at Foliage or pop next door to The Tasting Room or have a cocktail in The Bar.
The staff were charming and nothing was too much trouble and they made a couple of reservations for us for lunch and wine tasting. Our terrace room was very stylish and comfortable. We loved all the sculptures and artwork that adorn the walls and my favorite was the cheetah sculpture which majestically watched over the swimming pool.
Guests are also offered a shuttle up to the sister hotel Leeu Estates which is located just outside town where they are able to use the stunning spa and also enjoy complimentary wine tasting of the produce Muillineux and Leeu Wine Estates.

I had high expectations before my stay at Leeu House, after so many guests returning and giving it rave reviews, and I wasn't disappointed. The staff here are an absolute delight, a real asset to the hotel and their hospitality is warm and truly genuine. I was departing on my birthday and the chef had created a miniature (and very indulgent) chocolate cake for my birthday which was presented as a surprise during breakfast - what a treat! The rooms are superbly comfortable and really thoughtfully designed - down to a USB charging point by the bedside to charge phones, iPads etc. My stay here was short but sweet, and I already can't wait to return - I'd highly recommend it.

Leeu House really is a fantastic new addition to Franschhoek! It's the most attractive property in central Franschhoek being a renovated Cape Dutch building with thatched roof, manicured lawns surrounded by white rose bushes and trees, and an inviting stable door entrance. Being greeted with a glass of champagne to enjoy whilst checking-in in their beautifully decorated lounge certainly kicks-off your stay in a positive way, whilst taking in the surrounding contemporary art pieces, fire place, and bar with complimentary wine, spirits and snack for guests to enjoy during their stay. Both a buffet and a la carte breakfast are offered which can be enjoyed in their conservatory or terrace, with their ginger and orange juice 'shot' being a great way to wake up! Lunch and dinner are also served here and presented beautifully. The gardens already look extremely lush and well developed given how new the property is (only opened December 2015!), with a heated pool, well spaced sun loungers, a changing room, and pool side bar service. The decor is in a neutral pallet of soft creams, white and linen which will appeal to all, and really well laid out in a courtyard fashion. Definitely the next hot place to stay in Franschhoek!
