At Karkloof Safari Spa, timelessness is a way of life. In this spectacular game reserve you’ll enjoy uninterrupted game viewing, unlimited spa treatments, exquisite cuisine and pure relaxation, whenever you like it.

From the moment you arrive at Karkloof Safari Spa you will feel transported to another world, where normal life is left at the gates and timelessness takes over. It’s hard to believe that you’re merely 30km from the closest city, and that your home for the next few days is a breath-taking game reserve where you’ll count rhinos, giraffes, buffalo and warthogs among your neighbours.

After a quick stop at reception for check in, you’ll venture up to the lodge, driven by your private safari guide who will also play host to any game drives, walks or fishing excursions you decide to enjoy. This brief ride is pitted with interesting information about the local kingfisher who swooped down on a nearby waterhole, an introduction to the white and black rhinos or a stop to view the elegant giraffes saunter by.

Your villa awaits you, one of only 16 in the lodge, with sweeping views of the valley below; lush and enticing in the sub-tropical climate of Kwa-Zulu Natal. You’ll be forgiven for planning breakfast in bed or dinner on your private patio already. Why not enjoy the tranquillity that comes with no built up neighbours and only the local wildlife for company? Once freshened up in the enormous en-suite bathroom (remarkable valley views on tap yet again), it’s time to venture along the boardwalks to the lodge where you can enjoy a beverage poolside or in the library. If wine is your preference a visit to the cellar is a must, select your favourite or sample a new delight from the ever-changing collection.

You may decide to head straight to the Thai-inspired spa to get started on indulgent treatments in the very capable hands of the therapists. All highly trained, discreet and professional, you will be forgiven for not wanting to leave once you have finished your Thai Melon and Honey facial and Aroma Thai massage. A dip in the hydro-therapy pool or a lounge in the steam room or sauna may be just what you need before heading to lunch at either the Spa Café or back in the lodge.

The menu changes daily and you are free to order whatever your heart (or appetite on the day) desires. So if you prefer steak, egg and chips or a freshly prepared roast chicken salad with caramelised nuts, it’s yours. A truly tailored approach to food means that the only thing that is not on the menu is a lack of choice.

You are also free to dine where you like. From picnics in the reserve to in-villa dining, canapés in the library to dinner in the lounge, there is never a question of whether you can eat there, but rather when it would suit you. You’ll hear the words “it’s timeless here” throughout your stay and it truly is. Your schedule is your own. Whether you prefer to plan your walks for sunrise, your fishing for the afternoon or the spa all day, only you will decide when things happen. And if you happen to change your mind along the way, that’s perfectly fine. Timelessness is centre to the Karkloof experience so feel free to do as little or as much as you like while you are there.

A word of advice though, don’t miss out on a walk up to the Karkloof Falls. It’s a short game drive along the valley, followed by a gentle guided walk up a wooden boardwalk through four biomes to the majestic falls. The river and your private safari guide keep you company as your relinquish yourself to nature and learn about the animals that inhabit the reserve on a more permanent basis.

If you fancy some time in the water itself, perhaps you should plan a fly-fishing excursion to one of the dams within the reserve. Or if bass fishing is more your style, you can return to lodge triumphant where the chefs will prepare your catch for you.

There is much to keep you busy at Karkloof but it’s perfectly acceptable to do nothing at all. And since everything is included you have the freedom to try something new or revisit your favourite activities from yesterday. What you can be certain of is that you are sure to leave wanting to stay a little longer, even though you’ll probably feel like you have been away from the real world for ages.
