Average time to visit

There is no bad time to go on safari in the Kruger National Park. The experience does, however, change from month to month. In the summer months (October to March), it gets very hot. The verdant vistas are all the more spectacular because of the rains, but this means that the foliage is denser, water is more abundant and game is therefore trickier to see. There are lots of beautiful migratory birds during the summer months. While the daytime temperature in the winter months (May to September) is ideal, it does get a little chilly at night and in the early morning.

Kirkman's Kamp has spectacular views of unspoilt wilderness as far as the eye can see. The homestead serves as the recreational hub of the camp, particularly at mealtimes, and each of the eighteen cottages has its own private veranda.

Overlooking the Sand River, Kirkman’s Kamp is a historic camp, which was originally built in the early 1920s. The camp was named in honour of W. Harry Kirkman, one of South Africa’s foremost conservationists, who began his illustrious career as a ranger in 1927. A colonial atmosphere of gracious style and luxury has been retained, and one steps back in time upon entering the old homestead. The camp is situated in the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, which is part of the Greater Kruger National Park.

The camp has a lovely friendly atmosphere. The style is a traditional homestead, with old farm buildings turned into beautiful colonial style rooms. Old pictures and artefats adorn the walls, you really feel like you are stepping back into history and about to start an adventure. There is a large garden area where they serve delicious meals al fresco with views of the surrounding reserve. There is a lovely pool area to relax and unwind during the heat of the day.
