Description

Overlooking the Sand River, Kirkman’s Kamp is a historic camp, which was originally built in the early 1920s. The camp was named in honour of W. Harry Kirkman, one of South Africa’s foremost conservationists, who began his illustrious career as a ranger in 1927. A colonial atmosphere of gracious style and luxury has been retained, and one steps back in time upon entering the old homestead. The camp is situated in the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, which is part of the Greater Kruger National Park.

Kirkman's Kamp offers 18 gorgeous suites with spectacular views of unspoiled wilderness, surrounding the Sand River. Old-fashioned bedsteads and souvenirs of bygone years create a nostalgic safari atmosphere. Bathrooms boast inviting claw-foot tubs and stand-alone showers for complete comfort and luxury.

Undoubtedly the most prestigious game park in South Africa, the Sabi Sand Game Reserve is renowned for having the best ‘big five’ game viewing in the country. Located on the southwestern corner of the Kruger National Park, there are no restricting fences, thus enabling the animals to roam freely just as nature intended.

Location & Directions

Sabi Sands, South Africa

Situated in the heart of the 65,000 hectare (160,600 acre) Sabi Sand Game Reserve adjoining the Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. Kirkman’s Kamp has a traversing area of 6,000 hectares (15,500 acres) and overlooks the Sand River.

When to go

There is no bad time to go on safari in the Kruger National Park. The experience does, however, change from month to month. In the summer months (October to March), it gets very hot. The verdant vistas are all the more spectacular because of the rains, but this means that the foliage is denser, water is more abundant and game is therefore trickier to see. There are lots of beautiful migratory birds during the summer months. While the daytime temperature in the winter months (May to September) is ideal, it does get a little chilly at night and in the early morning.
