Hidden on the shores of one of the largest lakes in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, Chitwa Chitwa has recently been refurbished by its Italian designer owner and is now ultra stylish.

Each of the 10 suites are individually designed and have their own plunge pool and private timber sun deck looking over the lake, a prime game viewing spot. There is also Chitwa Private House, for the ultimate exclusive experience, where you’ll be treated to great hospitality, fine food and are able to tailor your bush experience to the last detail with your dedicated ranger.

There's a library with a decent selection of books, gym, gorgeous swimming pool and a spa offering a range of holistic treatments to relax and unwind the mind, body and soul. The curio shop at the entrance sells a selection of hand-made African memorabilia created by skilled local craftsmen, together with various traditional ornaments and bush-wear.

Chitwa Chitwa’s excellent location in the Sabi Sands along with its top guides and Shangaan trackers make catching a glimpse of the ‘big five’ a safari experience like no other. You can also enjoy cultural excursions to experience local life in the small village of Dixie, situated close to the Gowrie Gate entrance of the Sabi Sands.

Children are welcome at Chitwa but there are no specific facilities except babysitting. There is a Chitwa Children's Eco-Experience which offers activities such as a daily bush walk within the enclosed camp area, walks are guided by an educator who will offer the children the opportunity to learn about and identify the beautiful fauna and flora in the area. Basic bush skills are taught such as how to survive in the bush, what plants to eat and how to build a basic shelter. Others include face painting session and evenings spent roasting marshmallows and sipping hot chocolate whilst listening to the enchanting folk-tales as told by an "intokoto" (the Shangaan term used to describe a person with lots of life experience).

Facilities at the lodge include private plunge pools, wellness center, sunset deck, library, curio shop, central lounge area and dining area all of which blend seamlessly into the natural surroundings, providing excellent game viewing opportunities from the comfort of the lodge.

Game drives, family game drives, children’s programs and cultural excursions to the local village of Dixie are all included in the room rates. Spa treatments are charged additionally. You will get a chance to go on bush walks with passionate and very experienced guides during game drives and the evening safaris end with a sundowner, the perfect time to reflect on a great day's game viewing.

Location & Directions

Greater Kruger, South Africa

Nestled in a pristine golden triangle of African fauna, the luxury lodge basks in the sun on the banks of one of the largest lakes of the exclusive 63,000 hectare Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, which forms part of the greater Kruger National Park. This area, in turn, is incorporated into the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park - a world-class eco-tourism destination managed to optimize benefits for the sustainable economic development of local communities and biodiversity conservation.

When to go

There is no bad time to go on safari in the Kruger National Park. The experience does, however, change from month to month. In the summer months (October to March), it gets very hot. The verdant vistas are all the more spectacular because of the rains, but this means that the foliage is denser, water is more abundant and game is therefore trickier to see. There are lots of beautiful migratory birds during the summer months. While the daytime temperature in the winter months (May to September) is ideal, it does get a little chilly at night and in the early morning.
