The Garden Route enjoys a moderate climate all year round. In peak summer season, from December to February, temperatures can climb as high as 34ºC, although winter temperatures can drop to as low as 4ºC. Generally, this season has many sunny days with high wind at times. During the winter months of June, July, and August, expect frequent rains and a couple of chilly evenings.
Jan Harmsgat Country House is a guest farmhouse situated in Swellendam and is an ideal overnight spot along the Garden Route. With three different accommodation options and the whole farm to explore, it is ideal for couples and families alike.
Jan Harmsgat is the perfect stop-over on a journey through South Africa. This lovely country house has a feeling of historic charm which will settle over you the moment you arrive. The sense of space, charm and the wonderful opportunity to relax and enjoy your surroundings really makes this property incredibly special. The 680 hectare farm on which the house is situated provides wonderful country walks, exploring this rich mountainous belt with its extensive orchards of fruit, nut and olive trees. Indigenous wildlife such as Ostriches, Black Wildebeest, Grey Rheebuck and Springbuck can also be found here.
The ten beautifully decorated rooms are spread out amongst three different buildings, each with its own style. The Classic Quarters are set in the original Slave quarters of the farm, dating back to 1723. The building is in the Cape Dutch style, with a thick thatch room encompassing the 4 bedrooms. Here there are also 2 sitting rooms, a bar and the building is located just by the salt-water pool. The Superior Suites are then situated in a building adjacent to the main building, built in the 1800s. Each of the newly built suites within has its own private entrance and the most luxurious fittings and furnishings. Finally the Executive Suite is found above the original wine cellar and so features meter-thick walls, a thick thatch roof, and all the grandeur you can imagine of a historical building restored to its former glory.
Southern right whales visit the Western Cape from about June to December every year. These beautiful gentle giants congregate to the shores of Hermanus all the way along the coast line towards Plettenberg Bay.
