Riverdene Lodge offers guests luxury and comfort and is perfect for a family safari in South Africa's Eastern Cape. The Shamwari Game Reserve offers many additional activities to entertain children of all ages. Children can engage in the “Kids on Safari” program, visiting the Animal Rehabilitation and Born Free Centers as well as enjoying play time at the lodge, use of the jungle gym and more.
There are 9 rooms here, seven of which are inter-connecting and three of which have a sleeper couch accommodating one child. Each has air conditioning, a private patio, TV with satellite channels, and en-suite bathrooms.
The lodge has an infinity swimming pool with a shallow area for youngsters to splash around in, a boma overlooking the Bushman's River and a bar and lounge. There is a supervised children's play room and jungle gym, and plenty of lawn space for children to let off some steam and run around on. The staff here are excellent at catering to families, with imaginative activities to entertain all ages and allow parents the chance to relax a little, too. Meals are served in the dining room or outdoors.
Shamwari is a Big Five reserve and has a wide variety of wildlife, best encountered on game drives with the knowledgeable rangers in the comfy open-sided vehicles. The reserve has a strong focus on conservation, hence their partnerships with rhino programs, animal rehabilitation and the Born Free Foundation, and we highly recommend a visit to some of these as part of your stay. They are fascinating and educational for adults and children alike.
Children of all ages are welcome, and Riverdene is a really family-friendly lodge. The Kids on Safari program includes a children's coordinator at the lodge, who will discuss age-appropriate activities with you. Children under 4 years are not able to go on game drives, but child-minding is available at an additional cost for children up to 4 years. Other facilities include children's books, board games, puzzles, DVDs, art and craft supplies and more. A children's menu is available and mealtimes can be flexible.
Game drives in open-sided vehicles with knowledgeable safari guides, game walks and visits to the Born Free Big Cat Sanctuary, Ian Player Rhino Awareness Center and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.
