Game viewing is excellent all year round. Summers (October to March) are hot and wet, were as winters (May to August) are cool and dry. Daytime temperatures in summer are high and may soar above 36°C/97°F. Winter is known to produce beautiful warm days, though the evenings and early mornings can be quite chilly.

Riverdene Family Lodge offers guests luxury and comfort and is perfect for a family safari in South Africa's Eastern Cape. The Shamwari Private Game Reserve offers many additional activities to entertain children of all ages. Children can engage in the “Kids on Safari” program, visiting the Animal Rehabilitation and Born Free Centres as well as enjoying play time at the lodge.
There are 9 inter-leading luxury rooms here, with sleeper couches and cots upon request. Each has air conditioning, a private patio, TV with satellite channels, and en-suite bathrooms.
The lodge has a swimming pool with a shallow area for youngsters to splash around in, a boma overlooking the Bushman's River and a bar and lounge. There is a supervised kids club, outdoor adventure centre and a mini sports field. The staff here are excellent at catering to families, with imaginative activities to entertain all ages and allow parents the chance to relax a little, too. Meals are served in the dining room or outdoors.
Shamwari is a Big Five reserve and has a wide variety of wildlife, best encountered on game drives with the knowledgeable rangers in the comfy open-sided vehicles. The reserve has a strong focus on conservation, hence their partnerships with rhino programmes, animal rehabilitation and the Born Free Foundation, and we highly recommend a visit to some of these as part of your stay. They are fascinating and educational for adults and children alike.
Children of all ages are welcome, and Riverdene is a really family-friendly lodge. Children under 4 years are not able to go on game drives, but child-minding is available at an additional cost. There are plenty of activities, games, toys to keep everyone busy. A children's menu is available and mealtimes can be flexible.

Guests are advised to fly to Port Elizabeth and proceed Shamwari Game Reserve by road transfer. A flight from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. The distance from Port Elizabeth to Riverdene Lodge is 72 kilometres.
