Our first impression of River Bend Lodge was impressive and not just because of the herd of twenty or so elephant which we spotted as we drove up! The lodge itself is a little paradise in the middle of the national park reminiscent of an English village with a weeping willow in the center and billows of incredibly scented jasmine climbing up every single one of the eight cottages. These cottages are wonderfully furnished, comfortable and welcoming without being cluttered unusually they are carpeted, adding to the luxurious feel. Two are interconnecting so perfect for children. The main house is utterly stunning, with a light, airy feel and an upstairs library and verandah which leads from the main dining room, although guests will often choose to eat outside. There is a family room also, which is relatively rarely used, but has a television and games for the children. The food here is nothing short of delicious try the twice baked souffl for a real treat, followed by the sesame chicken salad simple, fresh and decorated with little pansy flowers. Activities here obviously focus on the park and the game within, but the lodge also has a spa area offering massages and other little treatments. Unusually, the lodge accepts any age of children and in fact as we were enjoying our lunch, a ten month old baby was enjoying a good crawl around the lawn. Because of this the lodge is completely fenced with electric wire to keep all animals out. Its a fantastic little spot in the reserve, offering elegant accommodation and delicious food.
