Best for ambience & design - With glorious views over Bantry Bay, this beautiful boutique hotel is the former home of shipping magnate Sir John Ellerman. Famed for its extensive South African art collection and 9,000-bottle wine cellar, it has just nine elegant rooms and two suites. There is a heated pool in the terraced grounds, a spa and a contemporary-art gallery that doubles as a private cinema. The separate, three-bedroom Ellerman Villa has a private chef and butler service; a second villa, which will house a state-of-the-art wine cellar and wine library, is currently being constructed. The concierge team will arrange anything, including tables at the city's best restaurants. All rooms are equipped with iPads for guests' use.

X-factor 'This is one of my favorite places in the world,' says Gold List contributor Peter Browne. 'It is exceptionally beautiful and undeniably sumptuous, with valuable paintings by the most respected South African artists, but it somehow never feels remotely intimidating or grand.'

When taken on an exclusive basis, children of all ages are welcome. It is pure brilliance. This stylish villa has access to all the facilities of Ellerman House but why would you when you have your own butler and chef waiting on your hand and foot? The art is stunning and the views are even better... it has a 180 degree view of Bantry Bay which can be seen through the huge glass, fold-away doors giving you a real indoor/outdoor feel.

You can either take over three bedrooms, or five. When all five are taken you have exclusive use of the fantastic Ellerman Spa. You must also go and check out the new art gallery over at the house... it changes regularly and features local artists.
