If you're visiting Sossusvlei, the best thing to do is avoid the summer, which is extremely hot. Therefore, the best time to visit southern Namibia is in winter (May and September) but bear in mind that the desert regions can be bitterly cold at this time of year. The climate of the southern coast is hospitable from February to May, but quite cool and misty year-round, and particularly windy in August.

Recently opened in July 2019, Sonop is the newest tented camp from the Zannier Collection. Located in the south of the Namib desert, the camp has been designed with an opulence of old-world safari whilst drawing attention to the stunning desert vistas.
Built atop of boulders in the Karas Region of Namibia, Sonop has a total of ten spacious tents furnished with antiques reminiscent of a bygone era. Designed to allow guests to travel back in time, rooms reflect yesteryear's wealthy explorers with the use of fine materials, rich and colorful carpets and exquisite materials to create a sophisticated space. Each tent will look out onto the panoramic desert landscape to offer awe-inspiring views bringing into focus the warmth and richness of the desert landscape.
During the evenings guests can dine under the glow of light from candelabras whilst silverware decorates the tables whilst delicious food will be served by black-tie and white glove service with exceptional attention to detail throughout. After dinner guests are welcome to head to the cocktail and cigar lounge where a warm and welcoming atmosphere awaits. During the day guests will also be able to enjoy a spa and fitness center, along with an outdoor heated infinity pool, all looking out onto the desert.

Sonop comprises eight one-bedroom tents and two two-bedroom tents most suitable for families. The one-bedroom tents have one main bedroom and an en-suite bathroom whilst the two-bedroom tents have two wide double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and a shared living room. Each spacious tent has canvas sides which can be rolled up to enjoy panoramic views, as well as four poster beds with king-sized mattress. A living area features antique and comfortable arm chairs, as well a large desk and vintage chest of drawers. The bathroom in each tent has been built around a central copper bathtub, as well as featuring a rain shower, double vanity, dressing table and separate toilet. Rooms will come with all the modern amenities such as a Nespresso machine, WiFi, electric kettle, sound system, bluetooth connectivity, a/c and heating system, telephone, safe, hairdryer and even a telescope for enjoy the stunning night sky.
Sonop welcomes children over the age of 6 years.
Activities at Sonop will be offered within the 5,600 hectare private reserve in the Namib. The reserve is home to a variety of animals such as oryx, brown hyena, rabbits, foxes, jackals, kudus and even leopards and exploring can be done in a comfortable game vehicle, on foot, or even on horseback from Sonop's own private stables. Sonop will also have a selection of electric mountain bikes for an alternative way to explore the reserve. The staff at Sonop will also arrange hot air balloon excursions, guided hikes, or even dinners in the wild.
