Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The best time to visit Etosha is from April to September as the temperature is tolerably cool, especially at night. From May to September the increasingly thirsty animals gather at waterholes, making it the best time to go to Etosha for game viewing. Summer is best time to travel to Etosha for bird watching as migratory birds (both intra-African and Palaearctic) flock into the park's many habitats after the summer rains.

Description

Andersson's is an authentic safari camp in the Ongava Game Reserve. A rebuilt farmhouse and elevated tented rooms enjoy great views over a busy waterhole. Fantastic, wildlife, guiding and hosting make Andersson's a great option in northern Namibia.

Andersson’s Camp is situated in Ongava Game Reserve, which was formed in 1991, when shareholders of Ongava converted four unproductive cattle ranches into a highly productive 30 000-hectare private game reserve that is now a haven to large concentrations of wildlife.

This former farmstead has been tastefully rebuilt to modern-day standards. The old farmhouse forms the main area of Andersson's Camp with 20 elevated tents radiating outwards into secluded mopane woodlands. Tents are a mix of calcrete stone cladding, canvas and wood, with a small veranda.

A real highlight here is the hide, accessed by tunnel and getting you within a couple of meters of a waterhole offering incredible views of the wildlife, and fantastic for photography! The area features almost all of the characteristic wildlife of the area, with plains game such as springbok, gemsbok, wildebeest, Burchell's zebra, Hartmann's mountain zebra, waterbuck, red hartebeest, giraffe, eland and endemic black-faced impala seen, while Etosha itself has elephant to add to the list. In Etosha, large herds of plains game concentrate around the waterholes in the dry season, making for exciting wildlife viewing. Lion move between the Park and the Reserve and both black and white rhino can be seen. 10 of Namibia’s 14 endemic bird species have been recorded in the 340 species on Ongava.

Ongava is particularly notable for the exceptional reintroduction programs and community work, a successful black and white rhino project has meant that Ongava have become one of the largest rhino custodians for the Namibian government.

Accommodation

There are sixteen twin-bedded tents and two family units of two bedrooms with their own bathroom and entrance. The tents are meru-style with a covered veranda on a raised deck with double door entry to allow for an uninterrupted view of the bush and gravel walkways on the ground. Each tent has a natural stone en-suite bathroom with flush toilet, basin and open air shower, mosquito net and luggage rack.

Childcare

Andersson's is a family-friendly camp and children of 6 years and older are accommodated and partake in activities with all other guests. If children are below this age, it is possible to speak to the management and make a special request. If children do not want to join parents on activities, there are a number of trained babysitters and child-minders at the camp, as well as guides with special training in children's activities from Wilderness Safaris. There are kids menus available, games and the splash pool provides a welcome respite in the hot season.

Activities

Game drives take place on both the 30 000 hectare private Ongava Game Reserve and into Etosha National Park. Night drives in the Ongava Reserve are available on request. Another great experience is to take a walk with a professional guide through the area, this takes in the abundant array of life, small and large. The skies in Namibia are incredible, each guide is specially trained in astronomy and their night sky talks are fascinating. Weather permitting, there is also a sunken hide at the waterhole, making for some incredible up-close game viewing.

For those after a longer trip, take a full or half-day guided morning and afternoon game drive in Etosha, Namibia’s prime savannah wilderness area (with a picnic); see the massive saltpan as well as the perennial springs that provide the water required by the Park’s high-density big game population.

For those interested in gaining a better understanding of the local community and Wilderness Safaris' work within it, a visit to the local school at Andersson's Gate to Etosha National Park can easily be arranged.
