Description
Little Kwara is in the heart of a wilderness area in excess of 1,700 square kilometers and bordering the Moremi Reserve. No trip to Botswana is complete without a visit to the delta, the watery jewel in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. This area encompasses a wide range of diverse habitats, ranging from the clear delta waters with reed-lined lagoons and channels, to open grasslands, mopane woodlands and palm-fringed islands. Little Kwara is located close to its sister camp, Kwara, though this is a more intimate camp and feels much smaller. The rooms are nicely designed and are raised up providing good views - although the camp is quite shaded by towering trees. Access to Little Kwara is by air via the Kwara airstrip. Little Kwara Camp is a completely separate camp from Kwara.
There are some very good game viewing opportunities from Little Kwara which offers a variety of ways to explore the surrounding bush. Mokoro trips are available year-round, and pleasant double decker boat cruises. For those feeling energetic, short island walks in the company of an armed guide are available, and the camp does offer the ubiquitous day and night game drives - although in this area off-road driving is encouraged, something some guests may feel to be a little overenthusiastic. Fishing is also offered on request, using normal reel and rod fishing - flying fishing enthusiasts need to bring their own equipment.
Trips can be arranged to the Godikwe Lagoon - one of the largest breeding colonies of yellow-billed storks in this area of Botswana. In season (from September to December), guests can see (and smell!) thousands of birds and their young in their annual nesting grounds with often hilarious interactions. It is here that guests will most appreciate the double-decker boat as they are able to peer into the birds' nests from above.
Accommodation
Little Kwara is a very intimate camp with just 4 safari tents. The tents are spacious, and are elevated into the tree canopy on wooden decks, each with its own private veranda. Each tent has its own en-suite facilities, comprising bathroom with bath and an inside/outside shower. This is an ideal camp for exclusive use by small groups and families.
Childcare
As there are no specific child friendly facilities, the camp is not recommended for young children.
Activities
Activities offered from Little Kwara Camp include - mokoro trips year round, double deck boat cruises, island walks as well as game drives both off road and at night. Fishing is also offered on request, using normal reel and rod fishing - flying fishing enthusiasts need to bring their own equipment. To put the concession area into context - 175,000 ha (1,750 square kilometers) is almost half a million acres! There is also a small pool based at the camp which is perfect to take a dip in to cool down in between safaris.
When to go
Botswana’s winter is May to October when the weather is hot during the day (not stiflingly hot) and cold at night. Botswana's summer months (November to April) can be hot and humid and there is a chance of rain. Botswana has one rainy season which runs between mid-December and runs through to mid-March.
