Insider's View

I'd recommend choosing one of the larger suites, either Harmattan with its playful decoration in snowy whites and jewel-bright reds or Chergui, with its mezzanine separated from the bedroom by an arabian-style wooden screen, complete with keyhole arches.

Located near the Andalous Quarter of central Fes, Karawan Riad is a fantastic base to discover this fascinating city.

Karawan's French owners have spent the last years lovingly restoring the riad and furnishing the seven suites with carefully chosen antiques and works of art collected on their travels around Africa. The style reflects the days of the caravans which crossed Morocco in days of old, laden with spices and silks. However, now instead of traders pausing during their voyage, it’s an elegant resting place of lovers of design, culture, and luxury.

Arriving at Karawan Riad guests cannot fail to be impressed by the elegant and beautifully restored 17th century courtyard around which the suites and public areas are located. As is the tradition in Fes, the courtyard is open to the blue skies above and decorated with a traditional marble fountain. As first floor rooms always tend to be the most popular in traditional riads, Karawan has the restaurant, hammam, and library on the ground floor with all the suites above, offering views into the central courtyard.

This luxury hotel has seven original suites which have been decorated with inimitable style.

Demani Suite

This tribal and rustic themed suite is the most intimate in the hotel, undoubtedly the real winner is the sunken stone bath, best enjoyed with a glass of wine. Enjoy the blissful sun from the comfort of this terrace which is dappled in warm light, yet the latticed linen can protect your delicate skin. As the scent of roses wafts from the terrace, you and your loved one can really make the most of this idyllic and romantic suite at its finest.

Suhaili Suite

As you wander through this Moroccan sumptuous suite, you can really appreciate the attention to detail. Whether it's the office space for the workers among you, or the verdant private terrace; your desires will undoubtedly be satisfied from the moment you step into this Moroccan wedding themed suite.

Laawan Suite

The Laawan suites epitomize art deco with a tantalising twist. There are two suites which are interconnecting; perfect if you would like to enjoy the myriad of Moroccan experiences with your family. You can enjoy an afternoon siesta either in the large sitting room or on the private terrace amongst the lush flowers and plants.

Chergui Suite

With the rich blend of citrus yellow and violet purple this suite encourages a truly warm feel. The bathroom is sumptuous with a large stone-tiled bath, where you can make the most of the view into the vertical garden in privacy. This suite is comfortably large for you to feel truly at home, and if your desires are to write to loved ones about your Moroccan experience there are plenty of inspiring places to jot a letter.

Zephyr Suites

When you have bid farewell to the day's activities or riads and Moroccan markets, the Zephyr suite is the ideal place to switch off and unwind in palatial luxury. Perfect for the discerning individual traveler, the combination of velvet drapes and spring like virtues allows a calming experience to wash over you. The real showstopper is the secluded balcony which looks all the way to the Merinid Tombs is the hazy distance.

Harmattan Suite

The vibrant and energising colors of the ruby red mixed with the zingy yellows creates a mysterious yet highly evocative feel. As the glass lamps sparkle in the sun this suite can create a real magical feel that continues out onto the balcony where you can daydream about living life in a riad. Take a snooze on the comfy king sized bed as the linen billows in the wind and you wait for your magic carpet to arrive; flying you to places untold!

Dzhari Suite

This voguish suite has not one but two fabulous balconies to watch riad life unfold in perfect privacy. As the warm days unfold into cool evenings settle by the fireplace and take in the excitement of the day. The bathroom combines the perfect elements of minimalism and comfort, let yourself wash away all of the strains of every day life.

Karawan welcomes children over the age of 12 only.

Afternoon tea is one of the highlights of staying at Karawan, with homemade Moroccan patisserie a specialty.

At dinner there is a constantly changing fine dining menu consisting of beautifully presented Moroccan and Mediterranean specialties accompanied by a Moroccan/French wine list.

The riad offers different areas for lounging and enjoying a drink indoors and outdoors in different areas of the property. The library is especially comfortable and charming. Karawan also has a spa and hammam.

There are a range of nearby activities and tours to enhance your stay in Fes. If you are staying for a night or two, we propose a cultural tour of the monuments of the medina with one of our local guides, or a gastronomic tour of the souks tasting some of the local specialties. If you have longer, why not let us organize an excursion for you to visit the ancient Roman site of Volubilis or the magnificent imperial city of Meknes.
