Essaouira and the Atlantic Coast

The city of Essaouira is perched on the western coast of Morocco and has been inhabited since the 5th century BC, although the city as we know it originated in the 18th century. Today, it’s primarily a fishing village with a thriving cultural scene, home to independent boutiques and several art galleries.

Essaouira and the Atlantic Coast

Essaouira is a laid-back city on the Atlantic coast, offering a more relaxed atmosphere than is found in the bustling streets of Marrakech. Dubbed the ‘Wind City of Africa’, Essaouira is a haven for watersports enthusiasts, while those looking to stay on dry land will enjoy exploring the winding streets of the fortified medina. The city is a picturesque scene – blue shutters stand out against whitewashed buildings, and fishing boats of the same colour bob in the harbour. Outside Essaouira, the Atlantic coastline is a treasure trove of fortresses and towns established under Portuguese rule, while Oualidia makes for the ideal peaceful Moroccan retreat.
