Description

With richly decorated suites, marble-tiled floors and a palm-filled interior courtyard, L'Heure Bleue retains more than a nod to its traditional heritage. A former riad, the hotel has been elegantly renovated and is now a stylish haven filled with sumptuous fabrics, glossy colonial-style furniture and glowing glass lamps. Once inside its peaceful walls its hard to believe you are just a few moments stroll from the main square and the bustle of the souks.

One of L'Heure Bleue's biggest draws is its stunning rooftop pool and terrace, which offers panoramic views across the medina towards the sparkling ocean. As temperatures soar in the summer, the pool offers a cooling respite to the sun's rays. When the light fades and the minarets ring out across the city the terrace is the perfect place to enjoy a drink in the balmy evening air, before heading down to the restaurant which serves traditional Moroccan specialties as well as European classics.

The hotel is within easy reach of Essaouira's famously wide, sandy beaches and its central location makes it a great base from which to explore and soak up the town's chilled out atmosphere.

Accommodation

The 33 rooms and suites are clustered around the hotel's central courtyard and have been designed to reflect the influences of Africa, Europe and the Orient. Traditional touches are complemented by modern amenities. The upper floor rooms have beautiful views across the harbor. There are four styles of suites — African, Portuguese, English, and Oriental — and each follow slightly different design schemes, but all have king-sized beds, wireless internet access, and oversized bathtubs.

These are the most standard of the rooms, decorated minimally with chic African style. They are located on the ground floor of the hotel, with a private terrace and marble bathroom with shower.

Childcare

The senior suites are recommended for families; extra cots and beds can be placed in the room for children up to the age of 12 years. Children are welcome in the restaurant for all meals, and there is a dedicated children's menu. The heated rooftop pool does not have a shallow end and is unsupervised, so you'll need to take care with young children in that area.

Facilities

A Moroccan-style breakfast of dark coffee, fresh fruits, and pastries is served in the open-air courtyard, while light lunch is offered either here or on the hotel's rooftop terrace, overlooking the city.

L'Heure Bleue's restaurant, Le Terrasse, serves an a la carte menu with a blend of Moroccan specialties and French classics. The locally caught fresh fish dishes are a particular highlight.

Activities

A number of activities are available locally, including golf, horse riding, mountain biking, hiking, sailing, surfing, wind surfing and camel rides. You could also visit a local Argan oil co-operative or take a traditional Moroccan cookery class. Closer to home, the hotel has a small spa offering a range of treatments including hammam, plus a private cinema and a billiards room.

Location & Directions

Essaouira, Morocco

L'Heure Bleue is located in the heart of Essaouira's medina, close to the main square, Bab Marrakech.

When to go

Spring (March May) is popular as these months are pleasantly warm and sunny, and the landscape is lush and green. Avoid August when the town gets swamped by large numbers of visitors from home and abroad. Fall (mid Sep-mid Nov) is also lovely, but the countryside tends to look parched. Summer is pretty hot, and winter can be chilly at night.
