Average time to visit
Any time of year is fine for a visit except from January to March, when heavy rainfall in many areas can make some roads all but impassable, and when there’s a high risk of cyclones in the east and northeast. In general, the best time to travel in most areas is April and October/November. The coolest time to travel anywhere is during the dry season (May to October).
Average maximum temperatures vary from about 30°C in coastal areas (higher in summer) to around 25°C on the hauts plateaux. In Antananarivo and other highland areas, temperatures during winter can drop to 10°C and even lower during the night.

I wasn't sure what to expect from our accommodation in Ranomafana. Having driven for two days from Antananarivo I was looking forward to somewhere clean and comfortable to regroup. Setam Lodge offered just that. Large simple rooms with tiled floors and en-suite bathrooms with shower. They even had 24-hour electricity; though plenty of candles are supplied in case of emergency! This was the prefect spot from which to explore the park, which is semi-rainforest and rich in lemurs. Our driver/guide arranged an English-speaking park guide for us, who took us walking the morning after our arrival. It was a truly beautiful walk through forest, across rivers and high into the canopy, from where we had spectacular views. We had some great sightings of a red-bellied, sportive, greater bamboo and sifaka lemurs as well as vast and colorful butterflies. You need a certain level of agility and moderate fitness to get the most out the park as scrambling is recommended and this made it all the more rewarding. We were incredibly impressed by the level of guiding. Although his English was not absolutely perfect, our guide's knowledge was excellent, including his use of Latin names.
