Situated only 6° south of the equator, Zanzibar enjoys ideal vacation weather. Temperatures average between 24°C and 27°C throughout the year with 7-9 hours of sunshine per day.
There are two rainy seasons: Acute, brief showers, lasting about an hour in the morning occur for a couple of weeks during November. The rains last slightly longer in April and May, but even then it does not rain every day. These rains replenish the Island and are often referred to as the “Green Season”.

Admittedly the road to Essque Zalu is uninspiring, bumping its way through villages and plots of land, but on arrival the resort more than makes up for this. Essques main area is no less than utterly awe-inspiring a forty-meter high thatched roof, vast and cavernous, enclosing the two restaurants, the bar and the Art collection, which is impressive. We could not stop looking up!
The construction is incredible and the whole area feels like a cathedral although is very quiet. Heading out onto the deck there is a large swimming pool with loungers and an incredible, long jetty leading to a beach bar and restaurant, perfect for lunch. Off this pier are two smaller areas perfect for couples wishing to eat away from the main area. You can swim straight off this jetty no matter whether it's low or high tide - rare in Zanzibar where the beaches are very tidal and definitely a big selling point!
The rooms, divided into beach front, garden and three-and four-bedroom villas, are immaculately designed, with the beach front rooms having a view over the rocks which border the beach. The garden rooms are situated in lush tropical gardens and are cool and soothing. The villas are enormous, each with either three or four bedrooms, and each has a massage room!
The overall feel of Essque is real quality nothing has been overlooked and the service is of a very high standard.

The view out to sea from Essque is one of the best in Zanzibar - it is truly stunning. The hotel has this incredible jetty jutting out to sea, and when you are standing at the end you feel like you are suspended over the lagoon, with the turquoise seas stretching out for miles. The jetty gives the hotel a very chic, exclusive feel, with funky sun loungers and white cushioned seating areas. The added advantage of the jetty is that you can swim at all times of the day, which is rare as Zanzibar is tidal so from the beach swimming is not always possible. The Mediterranean restaurant at the end of the jetty really makes you feel like you could be in a swanky Ibiza bar whereas the Market Kitchen, located in the main area is much more relaxed. There is also a third restaurant offering a gourmet a la carte menu, and a variety of bars so somewhere to suit everyone. The hotel is located near Nungwi, ideal for those wanting to explore life outside the hotel, be it by day or night. For groups or families the villas are brilliant, each with their own pools and plenty of space for eating both inside and outside yet being still part of the hotel you get the best of both worlds.
