Average time to visit

Tanzania is a large country, with a varied climate. Generally, the long rains run from March to May - the temperature is warm and the humidity is high. June to October is the long dry season, and the short rains are in November and December, much lighter than the long rains. January and February are again dry (the short dry season) so this is another good time to visit.

Swala Camp in a secluded corner of Tarangire National Park with 12 tented rooms which enjoy impressive views over a waterhole which is a hive of activity. Game drives offer you the chance to encounter the park's impressive elephant population.

Swala Camp in the remotest corner of Tarangire National Park makes for a luxurious yet authentic safari stay away from the busier northern sector of the park. Those with a particular interest in elephants will be particularly impressed with Tarangire, which hosts one of the healthiest populations on the whole continent, but there is plenty to see besides this. Swala Camp is famed for its 'bush TV' experience with a very active waterhole located to the front of the camp, which all of the 12 tents have sight of.

Swala's 12 tents are spacious and neutrally decorated to blend in with the surroundings and have strong eco-credentials. Set within a shaded grove of acacia trees, the tents all have a view of the waterhole which is visited by a variety of wildlife. All of the tents are en-suite and have both an indoor and outdoor shower and a deck that looks out over the plain in front of camp.

The game viewing at Swala Camp is rewarding and the remote location of the camp away from other camps and lodges makes for often private viewing experiences. In addition to the wonderful elephant population, Tarangire plays host to a variety of big cats and has a particularly beautiful setting with baobab trees and a riverine setting. The customized open safari vehicles allow for uninhibited views and the guiding is of a very high standard. Guests are also able to go on night game drives which allow you to spot nocturnal species as well as walking safaris which will allow for a completely different perspective on the bush.

  • Game drive in the Serengeti

Explore the vast grasslands of the Serengeti with your safari guide on game drives in the early morning and late afternoon. This is one of the most famous national parks in Africa, and it's easy to see why.

  • Hot Air Balloon over the Tarangire National Park

Take a hot air balloon ride at sunrise over the Tarangire National Park for a totally unique experience that will make your trip that bit more memorable as you look down on the bush from above whilst the sun rises.

  • Night Drives in the Tarangire

Night drives are an experience which is not permitted in many of the national parks of Tanzania. In the Tarangire, however, you can head out with your guide, searching the inky dark with a spotlight. This is when the drama ramps up in the African bush.

  • Search for the migration herds

One of Africa's most iconic moments - the migration of two million wildebeest, zebras and gazelles around the Serengeti-Maasai Mara ecosystem.

  • Walking safari from Lamai

Lamai is one of very few camps in the Serengeti which is permitted to offer walking safaris. This is a superb way to explore this rugged area, setting off on foot from the camp in the morning light.

  • Wildlife in the Tarangire

Tarangire is second only to the Serengeti for the concentration of game. It's an area of big breeding herds of elephant and buffalo. Huge baobabs provide shade for sleeping lion and night drives give the opportunity to see elusive leopard on the prowl.
