The only time to avoid Kenya is during the long rainy season in April and May. November is considered the short rainy season, however, these are less predictable and are much lighter. The best time of year to visit the Maasai Mara is during the Great Wildebeest Migration which tends to pass through the Mara between mid July to late October.

Asilia actively challenges the historical way of delivering cultural tourism. All the guides are exclusively Masai or Il Dorobo and all employees are encouraged to retain and practice the traditional Masai values such as traditional dress. In line with this the Nomadic Encounters team have helped build up and continue to support the Koiyaki guiding school.

Topi House was magnificent and Anna, our Kenya-based daughter, had the experience of a previous 'common-man' visit to the Masi Maara. So she had the perspective. What was on offer was bespoke, personalized attention, the rest of the world could use as a model of how 'to do it'.
Fredrick Ronko, if he was not a Masi Warrior, would be a much loved university professor or CEO of a very successful FT listed company. His quiet manner does not hide a formidable intelligence and ability to do things right. Together with warm 'People-Skills', Knowledge and Management ability: A winning combination. It was a pleasure to be in his company and a privilege to have him share his love of the Maara with us. And the background operation he runsMagnificent.

Topi House is a wonderful traditional style homestead right on the edge of the Maasai Mara Reserve and it really has the most incredible views of acacia trees and the vast plains and lunch is usually served on the lawn in front of the house so you are in prime position to soak up the setting. During the migration there are often vast herds of wilderbeast surrounding the house and it is not unheard for a pride of lion to make a kill on the lawn!

Walking in the Maasai Mara
Exploring the African bush from outside a safari vehicle is a wonderful experience. Get away from the noise of the 4x4 and, accompanied by your professional safari guide, begin to pick up on the smaller details of the African bush.
