The only time to avoid Kenya is during the long rainy season in April and May. November is considered the short rainy season, however, these are less predictable and are much lighter. The best time of year to visit the Maasai Mara is during the Great Wildebeest Migration which tends to pass through the Mara between mid July to late October but game-viewing is great year-round as there is abundant resident wildlife.
Situated on the Naboisho Conservancy in the Maasai Mara, Mara Nyika is the brand new camp from Great Plains Conservation. Recently opened in August 2019, Mara Nyika offers all the romance of an East Africa tented camp in an incredible game-rich area.
This small and intimate camp is located on the western side of the game-rich Naboisho Conservancy, bordering the Maasai Mara. Mara Nyika means ‘Large Plains, or Great Plains’ and is ideally situated overlooking the plains of the Mara. With just four canvas tented rooms, guests will experience an exclusive and private stay. The rooms are nestled under the canopy of umbrella thorn trees with walkways connecting each room. Offering authenticity, the camp inspires exploration and adventure with interiors of neutral tones, rustic wooden furniture and opulent antiques and furnishings whilst maintaining Great Plains ethos of conservation and low impact tourism.
The unique and prime location of Mara Nyika allows guests to explore the 50,000-acre Naboisho Conservancy, the second largest in the greater Mara region. An experienced and passionate guide is on hand to find the Big Five, and much more; from hyena, zebra and giraffe, to wildebeest, cheetah and plenty of plains game. Each guest staying at Mara Nyika supports the community and landowners that have come together to form the Naboisho Conservancy. The conservancy model combines the conservation of nature and cultural heritage, tourism and the enhancement of livelihoods for the local communities.
From the end of June 2020, Mara Nyika will be reconfigured so that it will offer guests three Guest Tents, each with a small lounge area, bedroom and bathroom with bath and shower, as well as two 2-Bedroom Family Tents. Each of the family tents comprises a small central lounge area, two bedrooms of the same size on either side and one bedroom with a bath and one bedroom with a shower only. Ideal for families and couples travelling together alike, these tents will also benefit from the services of a private wildlife viewing vehicle and guide which will be included in the nightly rate.
Mara Nyika welcomes children from eight years old and families can be accommodated in the family suite.
Guests staying at Mara Nyika can enjoy a range of exciting game activities designed to make the most out of exploring the 50,000 acre Naboisho Conservancy and the game that lives there. Early morning and late afternoon game drives are taken in custom 4x4 open vehicles, offering plenty of opportunity to experience what being in the Maasai Mara is all about. Great Plains also works closely with the community and guests staying at Mara Nyika can learn more about the local Maasai community on visits. One of the most incredible experiences on safari is a hot air balloon safari; leaving early in the morning you will rise above the plains and glide above animals as they wake for the day. On touching back down you will be met with a champagne breakfast. This experience comes at an extra cost.
Exploring this iconic ecosystem in an adapted, open 4x4 safari vehicle with your professional safari guide is one of the best ways to get up close to the huge volume and wide diversity of wildlife in the Mara.
Experience the magic of floating over the plains of the Maasai Mara in a Hot Air Balloon. Balloon safaris are a fantastic way to experience the vast beauty of the Mara and provide exceptional photo opportunities with spectacular lighting and scenery.
