Description

Governors' Camp is set in the heart of Kenya's Masai Mara in the riverine forest along the bank of the iconic Mara River. The magical location was reserved almost a century ago for exclusive use of Kenya's colonial Governors.

Governors' Camp was created in 1972 in a bid to set new standards for a luxury tented camp. Recent upgrades and extensions to the original tent sizes have helped maintain this standard. The camp is entirely under canvas thus maintaining the classic safari atmosphere.

The views from Governors' are split between the Mara River and the sweeping plains of the Masai Mara. Some of the 37 en-suite tents are set along the river back providing excellent opportunities for viewing the great diversity of bird life and the large crocodile and hippo population. Other tents enjoy views over the seemingly unending plains of the Masai Mara with its large populations of plains game.

As with the Guest tents, the communal areas are split between the river and the plains. The deck of the bar tent is a great spot to enjoy a sundowner with a view of the Mara River, whilst the dining tent provides views over the plains.

Activities include game drives and walking safaris with experienced and knowledgeable guides and trackers.

Governors also provides its Guests with the opportunity to take a trip in a hot air balloon. Silently drifting across the Masai Mara as the sun rises is an experience not to miss.

Governors Camp is set in an environmentally sensitive area and the Camp is proud to have been awarded a Silver Eco Rating from Eco- Tourism Kenya due to the sustainable tourism practices in place in camp.

Governors' Camp has 37 luxury all canvas tents each providing the comforts of safari enjoyed in luxury.

Governors' Camp has recently enjoyed a complete renovation and upgrade. Classic safari tents have new beige canvas creating a light and bright atmosphere. Each tent has en-suite bathrooms and large private verandahs from which to enjoy the views and wildlife from this stunning location. Some of the tents have views across the sweeping plains of the Masai Mara, others look over the banks of the meandering Mara River.

When to go

The only time to avoid Kenya is during the long rainy season in April and May. November is considered the short rainy season, however, these are less predictable and are much lighter. The best time of year to visit the Maasai Mara is during the Great Wildebeest Migration which tends to pass through the Mara between mid July to late October.
