The Lamu archipelago is a chain of islands separated from the mainland by a narrow channel bordered by dense mangrove forest and protected from the Indian Ocean by coral reefs and large sand dunes. Lamu Island has been a port of call for travelers for centuries. The many historical sites are proof of the area's rich history which, when combined with all the natural attraction of it's tropical setting make Lamu a wonderful place to visit. Location & Directions

Lamu, Kenya

Shela village where Peponi is located is 2 miles from Lamu Town. Lamu Town, Island and Archipelago, all of the same name, lie 2 degrees south of the Equator along Kenya’s coast. The archipelago is a chain of islands separated from the mainland by a narrow channel bordered with dense mangrove forest and protected from the Indian Ocean by coral reefs and large sand dunes.

When to go

Peponi Hotel is closed in May and June.

The rainy season on the Kenyan Coast is generally May/June. So from July onward the weather is gradually getting hotter and dryer until March/April when it reaches the high 90's (over 40 degrees C). Christmas/New Year is generally considered the peak season and the weather is lovely then with constant sunshine and gentle off shore breezes. If you want clear seas for diving then make your trip after August/September.
