Description

Deloraine is one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in Kenya, built in the 1920s by Lord Scott on the slopes of Londiani Mountain on the western reaches of the Great Rift Valley. The eight rooms and cottages spread between the main house and grounds offer a homely stay at the start or end of a riding safari.

Deloraine has just eight bedrooms split between the main house and an adjacent cottage and retains a family atmosphere in relaxed surroundings. There are three large en-suite bedrooms in the main house as well as two extra rooms which are suited to families which share a bathroom. In the cottage adjacent to the house there are three double rooms, all of which are en-suite.

Deloraine is the family home of the Voorspuys who run Offbeat Riding Safaris and is often included at the end of a mobile riding safari, offering more relaxed riding, or for non-riders the chance to relax in beautiful surroundings with the chance to explore nearby Lakes Nakuru, Bogoria and Baringo. A variety of horse-based activities are on offer including hacks, cross-country courses and polo matches. For those looking for more relaxation there is a lovely outdoor pool as well as tennis court and croquet lawn.

Accommodation

Deloraine has a total of eight guest bedrooms with three large en-suite doubles in the main house and three en-suite double rooms in the cottage. There are two extra rooms for families which share a bathroom.

Childcare

Children are welcome at Deloraine but please note that there is no formal childcare available. Offbeat Riding Safaris are not suitable for children due to the fast nature of the activity and hazards associated with this.

Activities

As the base for Offbeat Riding Safaris, there are plenty of riding options on offer including hacks, cross-country courses and polo. Day trips to see the flamingos on Lakes Nakuru, Baringo and Bogoria are also possible. For those wishing to stay closer to home there is a swimming pool, tennis court and croquet lawn.

When to go

The main tourist season is in January and February, when the weather is hottest and driest. At this time, the animals in the wildlife parks tend to congregate more around the watercourses, making them easier to spot.

In northern and eastern Kenya temperatures vary from highs of up to 40°C during the day to less than 20°C at night. Rainfall in this area is sparse and, when it does occur, is often in the form of violent storms. July is usually the driest month, and November the wettest.
