Best time to visit
Good time to visit
Average time to visit

If you're visiting Namibia, the best thing to do is avoid their summer, which is extremely hot. Therefore, the best time to visit Namibia is in winter (May-September) but bear in mind that the desert regions can be bitterly cold at this time of year. The climate of the southern coast is hospitable from February to May, but quite cool and misty year-round, and particularly windy in August.

Itinerary

Fly into Windhoek
Day 1-2

Windhoek

Starting your adventure is easy with overnight flights via Johannesburg or Europe. On arrival you are met by one our local representatives and driven by private car to your city hotel. It’s only a short drive to the quiet residential streets where the Elegant Guest House can be found. This peaceful boutique hotel is a balm after your journey, and with only six rooms you can be assured of a personal touch. Indulge in some modern comforts before leaving the everyday behind; every room has a DSTV satellite TV along with WiFi. Unwind tight muscles by the pool or set out to explore Windhoek’s historic centre, only a 10-minute drive away. This evening a visit to Joe’s Beer House is a must - sample both the legendary Namibian hospitality as well as exotic game meats and more than a few local tipples.
During the afternoon, your 4x4 is delivered to your door, where one of our local representatives take you through the route options on your trip as well as lots of local tips. In addition, a Europcar rep will show you the ropes when it comes to your 4x4. We take care of the little details including extra tyres, a local mobile loaded with all the numbers you need and super cover, so you just have to worry about stopping to admire the vistas as you cross the striking landscapes along the way.

Accommodation: The Elegant Guest House ( 1 night )
Day 2-4

Kalahari

Your journey first takes you south to the sweeping plains of the Kalahari, where bushmen have roamed for thousands of years. Camelthorn Lodge is nestled between sand dunes, where the Kalahari grasses are peppered with Camelthorn and Acacia trees. The traditional style enhances the sense of place, each of the twelve thatched rondavels look out over the desert with a private patio for taking in the view. Local culture flavours the lodge with the San inspired touches enriching the rustic feel. Cool off from the heat of the day in the lodge’s pool, where oryx can also be found quenching their thirst. Sit out under the endless desert skies and enjoy a dinner lit softly by Kerosene lamps, the sounds of the Kalahari blowing softly on the wind.
Set out in the cool of the dawn on a guided walk like nothing you’ve experienced. Your Bushman guide will show you ancient traditions and bring the desert to life, where even the smallest creature has the utmost importance. Once the blazing sun passes its peak, seek a thrill traversing the rolling dunes on a quad bike foray into the desert or perhaps simply enjoy the moment on a nature drive through the reserve.

Accommodation: Camelthorn Kalahari Lodge ( 2 nights )
Day 4-6

Swakopmund

Today you have to drag yourself away from the draw of the Wolwedans and continue north to the desolate peninsula of Pelican Point near Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. The frigid Atlantic on one side and the calm waters of Walvis Bay on the other, this remote stretch of sand plays home to a dazzling variety of marine life. Watch the drama unfold from the converted Harbour Control building and lighthouse, Pelican Point Lodge is one of Africa’s most unique stays. Over 2000 seals call this spit home, while flamingos prance along the shore and jackals can be heard mournfully calling in the dark hours. From your suite’s desk witness dolphins and whales as they pass by or simply watch the ships slowly drift by. The industrial past of the exterior belies the luxury that awaits inside, contemporary touches blend with a nod to the maritime setting for an intoxicating style.
The Atlantic beckons and is ready for playing in. Glide over the waves while the neighbourhood seats frolic by your kayak or push through the sands on a fatbike exploration down the spit. Summit the towering dunes of Sandwich Harbour on a 4x4 escapade through the stark sands of the bay. Of an evening watch the dust of the desert enhance the sunset, watch the sky seemingly catch fire while sipping on a freshly made cocktail from the hotel’s superb bar.

Accommodation: Pelican Point Lodge ( 2 nights )
Day 6-7

Swakopmund

It’s a short drive to the nearby Germanic town of Swakopmund where the sleepy aura hides an adventurous centre. Villa Margherita overflows with character and a historic charm which influences every room. This afternoon is yours to enjoy - set out and explore the Atlantic shoreline or simply lounge in the lush gardens before catching up on the news on your room’s satellite TV. Make use of our first-hand experience and book a table at one of the town’s famous restaurants. Feast on freshly caught seafood while sipping on crisp South African wine, sample local Walvis Bay oysters for some indulgence with a local flavour.

Accommodation: Villa Margherita ( 1 night )
Day 7-10

Damaraland

The misty Atlantic shores fade as you drive inland to the stark mountains of Namibia’s north. As Palmwag nears, you leave the ordinary (and your car) behind your guide drives you through the remote crags of the Etendeka Conservancy. The next three nights are spent walking the isolated paths of the reserve as part of the Etendeka Walking Trails. Catch the magic of this region whereas seeing the wilds from a new perspective, all while a dedicated team looks after your every need. The days are spent trekking between the walking camps, as your expert guide paints a picture of the conservancy from the wildlife that lives here to the inspiring tale behind this conservation success. As night creeps it, relax around a crackling fire as shooting stars streak across the horizon. Immerse yourself in the romance of Africa while sleeping out under the blazing Milky Way on your protected open platform. The accommodation may be rustic, but comfort is not left behind. Each platform has an en-suite toilet while the desert chill is kept away with downy sleeping bags. Hot showers are just the ticket after a long walk, and the hearty homecooked Namibian fare welcome after the day’s activities.
Breakfast in the cool pre-dawn hours before climbing the slopes of Crystal Mountain, the home to your next stop, Hill Camp. Perched along the dramatic cliff edges, get lost in the epic views; the panoramas cannot be beaten with the whole Etendeka Plateau opening up below. In the golden afternoon light take a gentle stroll across the top of the mountain, your guide quite literally unearthing the glittering treasures that give the peak its name. After another night counting shooting stars, it’s a relaxing walk down to the main camp of Etendeka in the valley below for your final night here. Head out into the plains and hills on your sundowner, the golden glow being the perfect light for capturing the sweeping landscapes.

Accommodation: Etendeka Mountain Camp ( 3 nights )
Day 10-13

Damaraland

It’s a short drive back to where you left your car at Palmwag Lodge, however the adventure is not over as the real fun now starts as you meet your mobile camping guide and vehicle. The next three days are spent traversing the wilds of Namibia’s remote and little visited north. Drive along the ephemeral rivers that criss cross this barren region, searching for the desert giants that frequent them. With your own team and guide, truly get away from reality and dive into the true heart of what makes Namibia seriously special. Your nights are spent round a campfire, eating freshly cooked local fare - the never-ending constellations a marvel above. The accommodation is basic, but the experience is anything but. Explore the Hoanib River, where elephant and rhino can be found or if you’re lucky a glimpse of the elusive leopard and cheetah that hunt these lands. Perhaps step out on foot to scout for tracks before setting out in your 4x4 to go down tracks few ever see. Dive into the stark beauty of these barren mountains, which perhaps can only be truly appreciated this way.

Accommodation: Mobile Camping Safari ( 3 nights )
Day 13-14

Damaraland

You come back to more beaten track this morning, but not before having a glimpse into a fast-disappearing world. On the way back to Palmwag, you visit a Himba Village, one of the indigenous peoples of Namibia who shun the modern way of life and continue to embrace the ancient traditions that few now follow. Back on the road, with your 4x4, the journey continues north to Grootberg Lodge for a night up in the sky. Almost precariously dotted along the edge of the Grootberg Massif, the lodge boasts of the country’s most awe worthy vistas. The gorges seem far below you as the sweep of the Etendeka Mountains stretch out to the horizon. Community run, each stay is a lesson in sustainability from the staff who work here to the activities, your money is empowering and improving this remote area.
The simple style complements the almost overwhelming views and sitting in the pool while the heat blazes is a tempting idea. For those looking for something more, a nature drive as the sun sinks rewards you with a sunset that cannot be beaten.

Accommodation: Grootberg Lodge ( 1 night )
Day 14-16

Etosha

Safari is on the horizon as your journey continues to the west to the celebrated Etosha National Park. Perched atop on a hill overlooking the national park, and set within its own private concession, Safarihoek boasts a superb location next to Etosha. With only 11 chalets, each beguiling you with panoramic landscapes of the rugged plains below, revel in the romance of safari at this intimate lodge. Sit out on the expansive deck as elephants come to quench their thirst at the waterhole below or try the outdoor shower in your luxury chalet where you can scrub off the dust with the cool breeze on your skin.
The captivating views are hard to leave, but Etosha teems with life just waiting to be discovered. The water holes of Etosha attract in wildlife from miles around making for thrilling wildlife encounters. Game drives on the private concession add an exclusive element to your stay, with no one else in sight to spoil your perfect shot. Guests can also set out in their own vehicle into the national park, where simply sitting by the water can yield a true National Geographic moment. The dark yields more treasures, when night falls traverse the reserve with your guide to seek the creatures that few normally see.

Accommodation: Safarihoek Lodge ( 2 nights )
Day 16-18

Central Highlands

The epic road trip is coming to an end, as the road turns back towards Windhoek. However, one reward still awaits along the way. Sitting at the feet of the Erongo Mountains, Ai Aiba – the Rock Painting Lodge offers a more serene pace to end your adventure. Cradled in a vast volcanic crater complex, this wilderness has sat unchanged for millions of years. Admire the ancient landscapes where bushmen once hunted, while sitting in the cool shade by the pool while steenbok prance nearby. Each of the African inspired chalets are framed by the towering mountains, your terrace the ideal location to take in the surroundings.
Walk back in time with a visit to the numerous rock art sites that dot this area, with over 200 nearby, a nature drive not only showcases the mesmerising landscapes but brings the past to life. However, on foot you can plunge into this otherworldly region. Whether setting out in the morning or in the lazy light of the afternoon, indulge in the remoteness and wonder that Namibia brings – and the magic that will leave you wanting to return time and time again.
