Growing up in San Diego, a place where others dream of visiting, I always knew there was more I needed to explore outside of state lines. But it wasn’t until my Junior year of college studying abroad in London that I really got bitten by the bug.
In a short 4 months I traveled to 8 different countries and more than 15 cities. Although Europe was my first love, the second I felt the gush of wind from a motorbike whizzing by me in Vietnam, I knew Asia had the cultural scratch I needed to itch.
I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to create some incredible memories through travel – I’ve eaten at the same restaurants as Anthony Bourdain in Italy, seen more than 30 plays and musicals in London, been bitten by a pink pelican in Mykonos, gotten over my fear of sea life through snorkeling in Komodo, driven on the “wrong side” of the road to the Cliffs of Moher, watched the sunrise over Angkor Wat, and been kissed by an elephant in Thailand. Although I have enough memories to last me a lifetime, I cannot wait to add more to the list!
When travelling in Asia, you never know when you’ll come across a squat toilet or a restroom without soap or toilet paper. For that reason, I always make sure I am carrying individually wrapped Wet Ones as well as a travel pack of Kleenex.
In the age of social media, it's all about capturing that perfect travel photo. When traveling in Asia, I recommend packing warm, bright colors. They are the perfect pop against lush green rice paddies and ancient ruin backdrops.
I recommend trying to learn a few phrases in the native language of the country you are travelling to. Learning simple phrases like “Hello”, “Thank You”, and “How are you?” is a small gesture that goes a long way. Most of the locals will get very excited
