Perched on the north shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, Cholpon Ata is home to a field of ancient petroglyphs dating back as far as the Bronze Age. Depicting various frescoes of life through the ages on glacial boulders, these etchings have long been a sacred site for the people of Lake Issyk Kul. Cholpon Ata is a popular destination in the summer months and a hub for hikes and treks in the mountains.
The ancient petroglyphs are the stars of Cholpon-Ata, worshipped for thousands of years by priests and locals alike, whose dwellings now lie under the turquoise waters of the lake. During the warmer months, people flock to Cholpon Ata to enjoy the lakeside beaches and attractions, and year round it serves as a starting point for horse trekkers and hikers.
